Hi Gail!

Loved MOFO and Lumpy Money. Will there be similar treatments to such great records as Uncle Meat, Absolutely Free, Hot Rats, Apostrophe’ and Overnite Sensation (to just name a few)?

Now I bitch…. Any chance of bringing the prices down at Barfko Swill? Sleep Dirt is a good record but $26.00? and then to have Music Today slap another $6.00 for shipping? I’ve sent cd’s through the mail and it has never cost me six bucks… $18.00 for Freak Out  (plus shipping) when I can run down to Best Buy and get it for $13.99? And the part that really kills me, to pay $32.98 (plus that darn shipping again) for MOFO only to have it show up some months later at ol’ Best Buy forFifteen and change?

I love the new releases but my wallet is screaming…. (so is my wife!)

Waiting in big anticipation to seeing ZPZ at the Beacon in December.

Thanks and the general answer to your question is yes, whenever we have enough material to showcase the original release properly.  It is not our intention to alter FZ’s work by adding a couple of extras here and there.  We just want to open a window large enough to significantly expand the view.  As for the bitch – Any recording that is not on our label we have to buy from the distributor.  It is a SERVICE we have always provided, that is, to have all the titles of the official catalog available to our customers.  We know you can get it cheaper.  We would also love to get it cheaper but we have an account with Warners and that’s the deal we’re dealing in.  We have no control over shipping costs.  And if you see MOFO (4 disc) for less than $16.00 that has to be a counterfeit or used piece.  I would like to see that.

Dear Gail,

Jim Wilson

Nor should you!  We do not own 200 MOTELS but then again, neither does Tony Palmer and that fact does not seem to have deterred from his self-appointed rounds.  Ah well.  We can only hope!  We do have a deal in place that should MGM decide that they want the deluxe version with all the bells and whistles they can ask us to help them out.  But again, they do not have to do that.

Dear Gail,

I love the covers of Frank’s albums and have collected most of the Zappa posters out there. I particularly love the recent covers for Wazoo,Trance-Fusion, and Everything is Healing Nicely. Do you have plans to release posters of them?

Here is a suggestion for making the album art more available to those who would like to hang it on the wall. There are companies like that make reproductions in many sizes and custom frame them. Would you consider licensing such a company to do posters of all of the Zappa album art?

Yours sincerely,

I might consider such an opportunity but have no current plans for us to be doing it ourselves.  Thanks for the question and the comments though.

There is a very active online community sharing live recordings strictly not for profit. What are your thoughts on this? I do not understand the question here.  A sharing, community?  As in giving away music that does not belong to them for free?  That it is illegal!

Have you considered releasing straight-to-digital material? Perhaps material that doesn’t have the sonic quality or completeness preferred for official Vault releases? Yes.  And we have already done so and sometimes in the future we will release it directly in digital format only.

Any chance of a ZpZ Wazoo tour? I cannot answer this question as I do not understand it.

Can’t Dweezil Find A Different Drummer, so that Joe can spend more time in the vault? We want to hear more music from the man himself, not more cover band extractions.

FZ did not think it important to be remembered – in direct opposition to his son’s feelings on the matter.  I would think it extremely unfair to FZ, to Dweezil and to Joe to refer to ZPZ’s work as “cover band extractions” if I did not I suspect you mean well.

Subject: Re: Why no Live Releases from 1973 and/or 1974 time period?

Hello Gail,

My question (hope i don’t have to eat it!) is why there haven’t been any vault releases covering the live years of 1973 or 1974. Perhaps something covering these years is scheduled for later on–not even counting the Roxy dvd(?)–if so, we eagerly await such a release.

We need more live Ruth (and the Fowler(s), and George & Napoleon & Chester & Ralph, etc.!!!!!

1972 has been represented by Imaginary Diseases and Wazoo; mid-1975 has been covered with FZ:OZ; 1976 with Philly ’76; 1978 with Hammersmith Odeon; 1980 with Buffalo. No FULL releases covering 1973 nor 1974. The last cd release covering 1974 in any depth was You Can’t Do That On Stage Anymore: Volume 2. This situation needs to be satisfied for those who feel FZ’s *strongest* work was from ’73-’74 (and there are many of us who do)! Thank You.

Help is on the way.  This new year.

Subject: Re: Music releases

I think the ZFT has done a fine job releasing material as of late.  As any FZ fan I just wish it were more.

What is the likelyhood of the following

1.) The original 12 record set?  The History & Collected Improvisations of the Mothers of Invention? Thoroughly dissected and resectioned and much of it resequenced and recollected into other existing releases.  Hard to know today exactly what the original material consisted of.

2.) More Grand/Petite Wazoo material (Waterbury 72 was a great show! – World premere of Montana)? Only Petite and Montana disastrously ‘premiered’ earlier in 72 (Montreal, October 27) than Waterbury.

3.) A live JLP band concert? Not in charge of any JLP band recordings but if you mean FZ band which includes Ponty then yes.

4.) Roxy?

5.) The unreleased – newly discovered – FZ album that was mentioned in London last week? Yes!  This year.

6.) More Joe title’s (Joe – Manage-a-trois?) Early 2011.

7.) A complete 88 show with the beatles tunes? Those would have to be cleared but otherwise yes.

8.) A Hot Rats box set/20th Anniversary set? Can’t understand your math.

9.) Flo & Eddie era studio material? Some but more than likely we will release live material next year.

10.) Expanded Bongo Fury release or Bongo Fury era concert? Yes.

Another question –

I know you hear a lot of bitching and complaining but I hope you understand that some of us are grateful for the material that has been released up to date.  I hope it’s the majority of us that are thankful – I know I am…in that event – I just wanna say thanks so far.  My question is – you do know there are lots of us that think you are doing a swell job (even better), no?

IF I ever win lotto or powerball I would take the hundred or so million and call the ZFT to help finance as many FZ releases as possible.  What the world needs is more FZ music…

Thanks Gail –

Bobby (a FZ fan since only money)

Thanks Bobby.  Let me know if you ever need my phone number.

Mike E.

It runs the gamut!  The material generally dictates how it wants to go together in fairly straightforward ways but sometimes (often actually) when I’ve deliberated over something for a considerable time and can’t really see how to put it together, I just get an aha and the momentum to go with!  Having said this there is a sort of overall plan –  the idea is to educate and entertain at the same time.  It think it is important to mix it up and keep a sort of balance that equals out to something for everyone.  I wish people could appreciate that there are far more obstacles to overcome than meets the ear.  And it takes a lot of time and care to put these projects together.

Subject: Re: 50 Questions

Hello Gail Zappa,

Thanks for offering to answer 50 questons.

A few of the many things I love about Frank’s music are it’s hyperintelligence and lack of sentimentality. When I see pictures and footage of Frank the intelligence is evident, and especially in pictures from later in his life, so is a certain kindness (you can see it in the eyes), so my question, if it’s not too personal, is:

What was Frank sentimental about in his private life?

I hope this doesn’t count as one of the 50 questions, but where and when will your answers be found?

Thank you for keeping Frank’s music alive and for continuing to release material from the vaults. Even though I’m not what you would call a “freak” or a rebel–I’m pretty much a goody-two-shoes children’s entertainer–Frank’s music has added more richness and pleasure to my life than I can possibly describe. Not a day goes by that I don’t listen to something by him.

Wishing you and your family all the best!

Sincerely, Rik Gern

P.S. A request, if I may: I love the ’88 band, and would be thrilled to see a complete concert from that ensemble released. …but then, I’m pretty thrilled with ALL of the releases!

Joe says “right on” to your P.S.  Thanks for your kind words.  The first thing that comes to mind concerning your question is cats and Dogess but I am not sure that sentimental is applicable.  FZ was way too romantic to be sentimental.

We haven’t really gotten too much into studio recordings because we usually have to bake the tapes.  Also, the things that we are most familiar with mostly relate to audio-documentarian projects.  Certainly there are far more live recordings but then again, this was FZ’s favorite way to create new albums – use the live recordings as the basic tracks.

Re Roxy –  Here is what we know so far:  First of all there is no synch and there are 3 fairly consistent camera angles and on that is pretty random.  Everything visual that we have found so far has been transferred into HD.  All audio elements (stereo mixes and multi-track masters) now live in the digital world.  What we need now is a director/editor (and/or both) and a budget to produce the whole of it.  There is an astronomical amount of work to be done – conforming, synching, surround mix, general clean up and organizational stuff.  All we have here is FZ’s stereo mix, but that’s it.  Now we just need time and money.  That and a few other value judgments based on what FZ actually saw are the reasons why he never made it a priority.  The good news is we have a slightly different system of values and see it as a worthy artifact to keep pushing up the hill of possibility.

Thank you,

Robert Murray (London)

Before the Synclavier his primary instrument for composition besides his imagination was the piano but then it really depended on what sort of ensemble he was writing for – and the guitar was often the only instrument at hand – say, on the road, for instance.  So really, it is hard to say.  Sometimes it might have been the coffee.  You know, necessity is the mother of invention . . .

Well it usually does from where I sit.

I have no great questions – the answers are all in the music.

Keep up the good work Gail.

Thank You!

Hi Gail,

I’ve heard that the video for A Zappa Affair (Berkeley ’84, symphony and puppet show) is in the possession of either the choreographer or the ‘puppet-master.’ I was lucky enough to see both of those events, you were there, too.

Any chance that video will be made available at some point. It is certainly worth hunting it down if you do not already have it in the vault.

Thanks for your hard work. Anybody that doesn’t like the way you release stuff, tough cookies to them.

Best wishes,

Teddy Hargrove

Yes I was there.  It was illegally taped.  FZ was furious.  No one should have this but us.  At this moment I do not know what we have in the Vault.  I will check with Joe.  Meanwhile I welcome any investigating on our behalf.  If it seems reasonable to do so it might be a nice archival release.

Hello Gail:

Has anyone ever approached you about making a movie on Frank’s life? Not a documentary.

I know the “Hollywood” types would look at such an undertaking from a pure ROI perspective, “but I for one care less for them”. Seriously though, I think a movie on the “story” of Frank’s life goes way beyond his musical genius, and although it may not broad main street appeal, “it is this reporter’s opinion”, that there is definitely a large “cult” of loyal FZ fans who would welcome such a movie. My “opinion” is based on the large number of younger people I have seen at the ZPZ shows. I have been to a few shows and was surprised at how many young people were in attendance. And then there’s Europe. I have been a fan of Frank’s for many, many, many years, not only his music, but also his “take” on several social and political issues. There are very few opinions that Frank stated that I disagreed with. However, he did offer one opinion he did give in one of his final interviews on the Today Show in which he said, “it’s not important to be remembered”. The very people Frank sited, Reagan, Bush, etc, YES, those are the guys that need NOT be remembered. But in Frank’s case, I strongly disagree. He was truly one of a kind! And NEEDS to be remembered!  Thank you, Dweezil and the rest of the “ZPZ” folks that obviously share my opinion.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Frank Luca

Yes.  On both – Hollywood and Documentary.  Yes he did say that it is not important to be remembered – to him – and that among the people for whom it is VERY important to be remembered are Reagan and Bush.  I would add that there are whole industries with government financial support to make sure that they are remembered in very particular ways.

Thanks for your comments.

Hi Gail-

Do you think we will ever get a chance to hear the actual songs, in their entirety, from where the solos from the Shut Up And Play Your Guitar series came from? And further on this subject… possibly video footage of those songs being performed?

Mark V. Fragola

Hmmm.  Perhaps not with that intention and certainly not all.  I do not think of any of FZ’s Guitar albums as “excerpted” solos.  I do not think he did either – whether at the time he was playing them or when he out the albums together on which they appear.  I think of these guitar works as whole compositions in themselves.  As for video footage and again, you never know what might show up, we are working on an archival project which really is FZ playing Guitar.
