Of course, it's a nice album: It's the 1977/78 band, and one probably couldn't ruin that one, even if one's name was ZFT.
8)

It is a top-notch source recording (1978), marred by a dismal mixing/mastering job (2010), I think.

Gotcha... your opinion. "Marred" and "dismal" still come off extreme to me though.

I do tend to think of the F..petti mix as being extremely bad. He didn't ruin the synths' sounds and the overall quality of the playing (hardly ever possible) , but if this is enough to qualify his contributions as an acceptable mixing job, then I'm your fancy mixing / mastering engineer any day.
:)

# Edit: I edited out ZFT and replaced it with Filipetti, seems more accurate to me (and less harsh. Well, a bit. Possibly. ) --

Mothermania still on Amazon.uk without a cover being displayed, but available 10/30 and still not posted on Amazon in the US.

Good description. I still have the theory that maybe all bass tracks on the HO recordings had a problem and all bass tracks on the HO recordings we hear on SY are overdubs.

"Mothermania" is listed on cduniverse.com for preorder! Also a CD called "Understanding Americ" which I'm guessing is a typo on their part.

The bass track on "Yo Mama" (fast middle section of the guitar solo) is the same one heard on the audience tape from London January 27 1978. I've never noticed any differences on the other songs either.

Then Filipetti is completely responsible for what we don't hear on HO.

Has anyone noticed that Understanding America is not being listed directly on amazon.com anymore? I've still got it in my shopping cart but it doesn't turn up as 30th October release in searches anymore. Also strange is that it doesn't list the Zappa Records label either. The thing is, we still haven't had any official notification of what this new release will be.

That's the new PR technique - complete mystery with no further information. Isn't it amazing?

I dunno, still sounding weird to me, like the bass track either mixed out or being very low in the mix with only the stuff that's been picked up by the vocal mikes, or drum mikes, or whatever, in presence.

The bass guitar is definitely present. My guess is that Fillipetti EQ'd all the meat out of it, which made it sound boomy and indistinct.

Which they are now saying is no longer available, so what's the deal?

Gosh, there's never been an announcement about a recording and then a delay about said recording. Never ever.

Oh Calvin, why do you insist in bringing in facts to mess up the minds of the posters here? I think I will order Mothermania for the different mixes and the spiffy sound. I wonder about this Understanding America because if GZ is trying to make Frank's thinking relevant in a Presidential election, it may be a little late if it ships like in December.

Oh, there I go again...spouting facts, how silly of me.

I'm still hoping for it to be a 'not-all-that-much-spoken-word-oriented release'. The title suggests anything from a born-again-infested songs sampler to synclavier to 1988 band material/interspersed with synclavier compositions (the AMPEX digital is popping up amongst piles of 1988-band tapes in the PEEFEEYATKO film.) I also hope Jaypfunk is going to like it.

Still no sign of this or Mothermania on Amazon. Think it's safe to say it's not happening?

You could order Mothermania separately from amazon.co.uk. I have Understanding America on preorder from amazon.com, so we'll see about the reality of that one.

Good detective work, brainpang! So it could be that ICA just purchases domains hoping to make a buck or 3 being the middle man, then?

Ahhh.. DUH! Thanks for pointing that out, dlokazip - as it was completely lost on me.
