Well unless they give a track listing, sound clips, or SOMETHING more on this one - I will not be pre-ordering this at all.... and if that means losing the chance to purchase it, so be it. I have a bad feeling that Disc 1 & 2 = the album split up "in its original format" and Discs 3 & 4 will be audio interviews with people that worked on it. Sorry - that doesn't justify $70 pre-shipping charges for me :cry:

Any way that we can get more info ZFT :?

Don't Ryko "own" Freak Out? Therefore, 4 discs of rehearsals, outtakes and, no doubt, talking. Y'know, the stuff the Zappa Trust refused to turn over to Ryko so as to promote the catalog...and bankrupt the company....

Which reminds me of my other concern : If Rykodisc is (re-re...)re-releasing the entire catalog in SACD format and they don't have the right to the original master tapes, etc. then these are just going to be a higher-quality stereo version of what we already have. No new tunes - no 5:1 mix...... Sure there are a few that I wouldn't mind "upping the quality" on but overall - crappy idea considering I'll be getting virtually nothing out of the deal.

The SACD thing is an old joke from the a.f.f.z. newsgroup. SACD seems to be going the way of the dodo anyway...

An old joke? So this :

=============================================

[For Immediate Release] Rykodisc, a subsidiary of Palm Pictures,
is pleased to announce the release of its entire 60+ album strong
Frank Zappa catalog in the Super Audio Compact Disc (SACD) format.

The summer of 2006 release of the Frank Zappa title Freak Out marks the
beginning of an ongoing program to enhance and upgrade the sonic quality
and packaging elements of the Zappa catalog. The release also marks
the 40th anniversary of the origianl release of Freak Out, rock's
first double album.

Rykodisc intends to release each Zappa catalog item within a week
of the 40th anniversary of its original release. The reissue program
will culminate in the 2033 reelase of Zappa's last release The Yellow
Shark. To further pique interest in the rerelease project, Rykodiac
will discontinue the current Zappa catalog by October 2004.

=============================================

. . . is not true???

I've formed a posse to search out the truth with regard to this 4-cd version of "Freak Out!". Wish me luck.

I appreciate the efforts of Dweezil and Joe with regards to the CDs that they have produced of FZ material. However, speaking as a fan since `77, I don't find the posthumous releases that they've released to be as satisfying as the ones produced by FZ himself. Perhaps that's stating the obvious but I'll probably pass on this one. Still waiting for "Trancefusion" but like most others I'm not holding my breath. :wink:

Well call me non-stupid or stupid. I don't care which. I ordered it. Would be nice to have a little or a lot more information about what's on it though. Hoping I don't suffer buyers remorse.

I did it. They got me. I pre-ordered it. I couldn't help it. :D

PS: The RYKO thing is definitely a hoax. Nothing on RYKO's web page, and too many spelling errors in the posted message (from a msg board where most are quite suspicious also). Even spelling error in Ryko's own name. Quite revealing. Finally, the thread is a bit dated: 29 Feb. 2004 23:24. :roll:

So, I'm now "a Person of Interest Who Contributed in a Material Way to Make This Music Possible". Sounds like they had to collect money before they could finish it, but that could just be my cynical streak. I don't plump for things like this very often, so what the hey, I'm giving it a shot.

Yeah, that's a joke. Forget about that.
We had a thread about it on the old forum a couple of years ago.

I'll first need to have everything of the current catalogue before starting with this, and it seems like a horror film scenario: It's 60+ upgraded albums we're facing, people! :shock: :roll:

I really need to be sure of it's quality before deciding to buy it.
If it's produced as shoddy as Imaginary Diseases I think I'll pass.
Great album, Imaginary Diseases, but the packaging looks cheaper than a soft-porn postcard! :x :P

I think they don't want to repeat the mistake they made with FZ: OZ. They said that the first 5000 who pre-ordered that one would get their name on it. It ended up being less than 2500...

I guess that's why they use a deadline-date this time (Aug. 22).

And, when the 4-CD box ships, they will release the 2-CD box for regular release. So, the 4-CD box will never be available in stores.

Well, of course it would be nice with more info, but... I will pre-order. Right now.

Come to think of it, if the dates of the appeareance of those re-releases mirror the original dates, it's a manageable deal... 8)
