Hard one!
Outside Now (Joe's Garage). BTHW version is also great, but I like slightly better Joe's solo, it has a lot feeling to it.

Best version of Pound For A Brown:

The Legend Of The Golden Arches vs A Pound For A Brown On The Bus vs Pound For A Brown (ZINY) vs Pound For A Brown (The Yellow Shark)

My answer: any version with the tempo as on UM/TYS. But if I had to pick one, I think the Yellow Shark one.

Sleeping In A Jar (UM) vs Sleeping In A Jar (AOTT) vs Sleeping In A Jar (PP).

In-tune, only because of the guitar solo. Anyway, 2 of my all time favourites.

Brown Shoes Don't Make It vs Didja Get Any Onya?

1. Original (ZA)
2. ZINY
3. Rat Tomago
4. Beat It With Your Fist
5. Torchum (TF)
6. Swaggart version
7. Stage #1
8. Original 'Original' version (Stage #4)
9. Countles other posthumous versions and guitar solos.

My favorite version of Torture is the "original" Beefheart version from Stage 4.

Billy The Mountain
Just Another Band version
Playground Psychotics version
Carnegie Hall version

I'll nominate the Carnegie Hall one simply because it contains a sax solo, absent in other released versions. And for more of the same, see "The Old Curiosity Shoppe" on FM, which features soprano saxophone and guitar solos from either an early or a late, definitely non-circulating 1971/5/21 performance.

Okay, solo time:

Get A Little vs. Sleazette

You have changed my mind sir. I used to pick the PP version, but I do see what you are saying. I'm still bummed over the sound of Carnegie, and it has nothing to do with mono. I absolutely love the mono versions of Lumpy Money Disc 1.

To my non-musicians ears, these are very similar solos? I give the nudge to Sleazette. I think it has a dirtier tone than Get A Little, plus the extra length doesn't hurt either.

The Black Page:
Hammersmith
Lather
Make A Jazz Noise
Stage 4 {'84 Band}
Zappa In New York

I think the Lather one, it's the BP no 1 after all innit? I do go for statistical density in this case.

Okay, King Kong:

Uncle Meat
Ahead of Their Time
YCDTOSA 3
"The Nancy & Mary Music" on Chunga's Revenge LP
Make A Jazz Noise Here
Road Tapes Venue 1
Hammersmith Odeon
Carnegie Hall

You can't beat Uncle Meat on that one, but Jazz Noise runs a close second in my humble opinion. Might just be my true affection for that release period.

Cheepnis:
Original Roxy & Elsewhere version
The Helsinki version
or, the recent Roxy By Proxy version including the drum piece.

I have to go original Cheepnis on this one, but goddam I love the drums only version too! Here's a good one:

Zoot Allures
- original
- DHBIM
- TBBYNHIYL
- Vol. 3
- FZPTMOFZ
- Ritz '81 (Truck Driver Divorce)

Original. I definitely like Dave Parlato's bass and Ruth's marimba on that one. FZPTMOFZ is nice extended version too.

Okay, blues-rock songs about Potato-headed Bobby!

San Ber'dino VS Advance Romance

Moggio

Now let's tackle the BWS version of Little House I Used to Live In, as it does in fact contain three compositions on their own, all performed live separately.

Little House piano solo (mostly played live on 1978 tours)
Return of the Son of the Hunchback Duke (essentially what's on Fillmore East '71, performed 1968-71)
Little Chamber Music I Used To Play (chamber music interlude at 13:35-14.48, performed live in June '69).

This might be my favourite FZ tune.

I have to say the piano intro is mind-blowing, then the hapsichord interlude is ultra-close second, the Hunchback Duke is ultra-close third.

Now, two songs where Frank whips it out!
Invocation & Ritual Dance Of The Young Pumpkin vs Willie The Pimp

Invocation, his solo against woodwind was more adventurous.

Strictly Genteel

I choose the 200 Motels version. I find the Orchestral Favourites more serious but less emotive. And the 200 Motels version is longer.

Here's some marimba stuff:

The Black Page #2(Lather) vs The Dog Breath Variations(Uncle Meat)

The Dog Breath Var.s on UM, it's quite a lovely arrangement, Ruth is definitely right that the organ really made the melody sing.

Farther O'Blivion. In the red corner, "Imaginary Diseases" CD. In the blue corner, "Road Tapes Helsinki" album.

Imaginary Diseases version. In Road Tapes version the (caravan with a) drum solo gets too long for me.

2 big sax solos:

The Gumbo Variations vs The Purple Lagoon
