I'm listening to the "Nancy and Mary Music" from Chunga's right now. There's a great guitar break at 1:40. <br><br>Most people seem to like his late 70s guitar style better, but I really dig what he was playing with the Flo and Eddie band. "Dog Breath" from JABFLA also has a great solo. Frank was one of the true masters of the wah wah pedal.

Plus I love the musical buildup to the solo...that segue (that also appears in Wild Love as the segue into Yo' Mama), then the groove of the dirty guitar with the sinister keyboards playing those creepy arpeggios... just killer stuff!<br>

I posted this somewhere else by mistake and got a baseball bat round my head by someone for not looking through the search feature and post it here, so here it goes again.

My favourite solo is from the album Sheik Yerbouti, and the solo is in the song Yo' Mama

Not everybody here is so anal about multiple threads. I mean, Zappa and guitar solos? There are probably hundreds of threads about Zappa and guitar solos. This one hasn't been used for over 3 years and I've seen others since then. Just do your thing mate and don't worry about the worriers. The search feature isn't that brilliant anyway.

Thanks but as you can see here viewtopic.php?f=1&t=16148 this bloke came down on me like ton o' bricks

Got me real pissed off to the point where I had to edit my original post. I guess some forumites gets really anal when they've run out of pants to sniff.

Yo Mama
Son of Orange County
Inca Roads-and its derivatives

I love Watermelon, Deathless Horsie etc but they I don't think I'd class them as solos.

Of recent it's been RDNZL (from YCDTOSA Vol. 5), Alien Orifice, Drowning Witch & Them or Us - but there are so many cool ones.

"Get a little" from "Weasles" is my fave, although, to my shame I must admit to not being a massive guitar solo fan, at least as regards LOOOOOOONG guitar solos. For instance I can't say I enjoy 'Guitar' as much as I enjoy other Zappa albums and found 'Shut Up and Play" better (more variation, possibly). Now take me outside and shoot me.

Yo Mama is the one for me......also

The acoustic solo on 'Sleep Dirt' (I think it is) with
James 'BirdLegs' Yeoman on rhythm guitar.
The one that ends with Zappa asking 'getting tired?'
and James replies, 'no, my fingers get stuck'.

so...
apparently "blobbers" loves all the solos. However, at the moment, his two favorites include zombie woof from YCDTOSA Vol.1 which, by the way, is absolutely fucking ace. And then theres that ol. g minor thing from guitar, which yet again, is absolutely fucking ace. In conclusion, it makes his hairs stand up an all that.

My other favourite is St. Etienne, especially as it was
captured on video (YouTube submission by Thomas Nordegg).
It is a wonderful lead guitar improvised composition
It also actually captures him break a string as it fades out.

He gestures with his right hand the string break in a way
that, as a guitarist myself, I recognise.

Maybe 'blobbers' has changed his mind since 4 years ago. What say you, Blobbers, you crazy bastard?!

You must have had a change of heart for I remember
a few years ago where you were down on some of FZs
Halloween 81' guitar solos with his dramatic usage of dynaflangers.

Arguably as Steve Vai may have acknowledged FZs usage of some post production effect
your blanket commentary certainly shows a positive sense of awareness.

I do like them all but my top five (since I get a little tingle in my spin when they play) are:

1.) Inca Roads - OSFA
2.) System of Edges - Guitar
3.) The Evil Prince - YCDTOSA 4
4.) Any Kind of Pain - BTHW
5.) Black Napkins - ZA

when the forum crashed, 25% or so of the users were deleted, most threads became fucked up because all posts from the deleted users were also deleted, page numbers didn't relate, threads still tried to roll over to the next page

translation: blobbers posted once, it didn't show up so he tried it again, gave up after 4 attempts, the 4 posts finally show up when the deleted posts from this thread were replaced by new ones ... admin resolved this on the last phpbb patch

Montana (Overnite), Penguin In Bondage (BBYNHIYL and Roxy), any Inca Roads (Stage Vol.2 is my absolute favorite), Rat Tomago, On The Bus, Carolina Hardcore Ecstasy (Bongo Fury) and dozens of others I can't think of right now. My favorite thing about Uncle Frank's solos is that he doesn't rely on stock licks (which is hard for a guitar player. I find myself falling into little 'lick-traps' in my own playing.) He always had fresh melodic ideas and his tone was KILLER!
