I think the limit on a poll is ten options, so I've split this album into two separate polls.

If you come to view, why not vote, too? 8)

Well, that's comforting to know, but what's your favorite song?

You mean, on the entire album? I think the one I voted for in "cd2" poll, "Purple Lagoon/Approximate".

I fucking love Zappa In New York.
The way all the instruments sound and interact.. just perfection.

Punky's Whips is one of Frank's greatest acheivements in my book.

Cruising For Burgers is also ridiculously great here.

I like the "old" mixes better. Some of it is on Läther. The reverb overkill on the NY CD doesn't sound right to me. It's a matter what you heard first. Since I'm an older fart it was the vinyl in my case. I even have the vinyl with Punky's Whips on it. It's probably a counterfeit (from Italy), but I don't care because it's really up to original standards (looks official and sounds official). Of course I also have the original shortened version and another one where the cover lists all of the tracks but the records are still the shorter version which I found out only afterwards. That didn't matter because it was the normal price at a normal store back in 1978.

So do yourself a favour and listen to the original mixes where available. IMO the guitar overdubs on Punky's are unneccessary, though probably from the original overdub sessions, like the overdubs on Sofa and Purple Lagoon.

This morning it crossed my mind, whether or not this particular song could be a hidden between-the-lines satire against the Warner Bros? After all, rock'n'roll stars do want to get laid and drink beer (sort of CC) and there's of course a mention of "little contract here", which may refer to a record contract, which would tie the rock stars to the devilish powers that is a major label. Hmmm...

Cruising For Burgers. It has an interesting texture and approach that I never heard Zappa do before, or after. Punky's Whips works better on Baby Snakes.

Have you ever heard the Baby Snakes version? The satire's not so hidden there...

Punky's Whips has some amazing playing and themes in it, and is amazing. It's probably a tie between it and I Promise...though Cruising is one of my favorite Zappa solos.
