Frank ZAPPA's last touring band – all stars:

Tommy MARS (keyboards/vocal), Bruce FOWLER (trombone), Walt FOWLER (trumpet),
Kirk McGETRICK (bass clarinet/barytone sax), Larry KLIMAS (soprano sax),
Arthur BARROW (bass), and Vinnie COLAIUTA (drums)

The MVP (The Mar Vista Philharmonic) is the new name of this group, partly known under the name of THE BAND FROM UTOPIA, continuing the musical legacy of the late rock genius Frank Zappa. Now the music is a free jazz jam, more Miles Davis than Frank Zappa.
This CD is a must for all Zappa fans, and as FZ put it: Jazz ain't dead, it just smells funny!

The leading star of MVP is the keyboard genius TOMMY MARS (ex Zappa/Steve Vai), but the real sensation here is in the interplay between these seven musicians. It is awesome how they spontaneously create music together! It sounds arranged, even with vocals, but the music, as well as the band, has developed from a series of free jazz jam sessions after Zappa’s premature death in 1993. Arthur Barrow puts it this way in the liner notes “The idea behind these improve sessions has evolved into an effort to compose music as a group spontaneously, in real time.”

NO FOREST FIRE was produced by ARTHUR BARROW (ex Zappa/the Doors/etc), and recorded in the legendary LOTEK STUDIO, Mar vista, Los Angeles, while a real forest fire was threatening...
