Trendy, you are right about the young'uns not observing the basics on getting a job - but maybe it was best for her in the long run. When you get out of your twenties, you are stuck with the real world anyway, why deal with it any earlier than you have to?

I've always thought it was about learning to stand up for yourself.

"Just to grow me a chin / It popped out once / But my dad pushed it in / Why did he hurt me?"

I was just looking at the Baby Snakes album cover and it suddenly jumped out at me that there's a baby snake right there. It's a tongue, pink and wet by a hole which is usually empty, that is, a throat. I mean, how many times have I looked at that cover. It's the cover of Baby Snakes so it's only reasonable to assume that it might be relevant.

It's like when I discovered the Debra Kadabra/Mr Tambourine connection.

Baby snakes is about young girls, in the 70's girls were referred to as “snakes” if they were easy to get and therefore a young one would be a baby snake, "pink and wet" refers to a young hot pussy...as well as "usually empty tiny too" (thus the young girl on the cover).

"Cast your dancing spell my way, I promise to go under/into it"=

Out chorus from Debra Kadabra, also a line from Dylan's Mr. Tambourine man.

I always thought the song was about the sound set-up of a concert. The "Baby snakes" are the chords and wires. I am taking a recording class at college, and we call the small patch cables "Snakes".

"They come out late at night" for a concert.
SMPTE is the time code used for syncing audio with video footage. "That is what keeps them in sync"

"They can probably hear me" is the mics picking up sound through the "snakes"

"Give them a drink" maybe means spraying the cables with a small amount of water from a bottle, to keep them from over-heating (technology wasn't as great back then)

Interesting! I never noticed the connection  but I'm not a huge Dylan fan :P

Kind of like how Beefheart borrowed "Come out to show dem" in Moonlight on Vermont from Steve Reich's "Come Out" song. I never noticed the connection until someone pointed it out to me, and then I felt foolish for not having paid more attention as I am fans of both Beefheart and Reich.

I'm a fan of Dylan's, just not "Mr. Tambourine Man". I happened to listen to the whole song one day and go "Wow, I did not know that."

BABY SNAKES
It's possible that Frank had attached a "moviemaking" theme to the song when he was preparing it for release on Sheik Yerbouti. Bear in mind that he took time to figure out a meaning for "SMPTE" (before the fictional Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers it stood for "suck my pee-pee toward the end"). But that doesn't discount the popular theory that it means either dicks, or clits, or both of the aforementioned.

WIND UP WORKIN'
Frank confirmed to Simon Prentis and Ben Watson that Manny the Camper wanted to buy something other than white gas! If you have any trouble determining what Davey Moire is shouting, listen to the Bianca-era live renditions, where the backing vocals seem to complete the phrase
FZ & BO: "Manny The Camper wants to buy some white..."
RW & TB: "(Wind up workin' in a gas sta-) FISH!"
And we all know what Ben Watson made of this "anti-semitic" reference!

THE TORTURE NEVER STOPS
Many possible meanings have been attached to this song - and I think at least three of them are "true". Surely the reason Frank made it such a fixture of his live repertoire is its multi-layered lyric.
The imagery may come from Frank's beloved '50s B-Movies - the medieval-style dungeon/torture chamber, the mad scientist, the sadistic monarch, these are all low-budget movie staples. But...

Frank indicated onstage in early '75 that it was a lyrical portrait of Captain Beefheart. (At that point it was of course officially titled "Why Doesn't Someone Get Him A Pepsi?" - or variants thereof). The lyrics could apply to hiim as either a slovenly teenager, with parents at his beck and call (He'd shout "Sue, get me a Pepsi!" and she invariably would, with only a bare minimum of protest). Or they could apply to him during the Trout Mask period - when he effectively imprisoned his band members, and tortured them psychologically, living out the "Evil Prince" role. Or, as Frank suggested in Uniondale, they could apply to his then-current lifetsyle in his trailer in the desert.
But the Captain responded by implying that the lyrics applied to Frank himself in the recording studo, imposing his "red-in-the-face, erection-at-all-timss, nose-to-the-grindstone work ethic" on his musicians and technicians, and eventually "locking in" the Vault as near as he could get to "everything that" had "ever been" in his musical career.
Or it may be an allegory about political prisoners - applicable to scenarios fron the Nazi concentration camps (yes, Mr Watson!) to Camp Reagan to wherever Bradley Manning is being held now.
Or it may just be a song about BDSM and sex-slavery - hence the recording the moans and groans of Gail, her unnamed friend, and himself, engaged in some non-vanilla sexual pastime - relating this to the quest for self-knowledge ("locking in of everything that's ever been") and freedom from religion and its constricting/outdated notions of what constitutes "sin".

Unlike most interpretations of Zappa lyrics... Btw, I can't remember Watson claiming antisemitism for WUWIAGS, although I do remember the tenuous association with Nazism and gas chambers - OTT and entertaining, as always with Watson.

Where did this Suck My Pee Pee Toward The End canard come from? Did Frank or somebody from the band actually refer to it that way? What's the source?

All early 78 live versions including the one on Hammersmith Odeon.

It is like saying "wow", urbin dic says sometimes substituted for the word "Fuck", I never heard that before...I believe Bowzer from Sha Na Na used to say it a lot and when FZ did this song 50's revival bands were huge due to American Griffiti and Happy days...

It comes from years and years of carnival barkers shouting "Yes, sir! Yes, sir! Yes, sir!" to catch the attention of passers-by. It eventually mutated into "Yowsa Yowsa Yowsa".
