I do not think any one tune describes Franks music, that would better be left for a band like the Stooges.

some tracks get skipped - promiscuous, goblin girl, jumbo go away, bobby brown, stevies spanking...
Its nothing to do with the lyrics, although they dont float my boat either, the tunes are just dreary.
I quite like baby take your teeth out though....

I was joking, how can Dina Moe Humm describe Frank's music?

Seriously, i always skip Big Legged Emma and Why Dontcha Do Me Right, fine tracks, but they don't really belong to Absolutely Free IMHO

Thank goodness you are still here Bonny. Life is precious and I am sure Kapt.kirk agrees. We need all the aficionados of The World's Finest Optional Entertainment we can get :) 8)

I have decided Stick Together is the worst, it isn't interesting in any way at all. That's pretty much it.

Yep. And Sex is kinda stupid, too. But Man From Utopia is a good album nevertheless ...

Certainly my least favourite Zappa album

I like them both. SEX is okay, I do enjoy it but only a little. I love TMFU. One of my first Vinyl's. Cocaine Decisions is pretty cool I always thought. And Jazz is awesome. It's a great album for Moggio, Tink Walks Amok, We Are Not Alone and The Radio Is Broken!

I really used to dislike TMFU back in the day though, I thought it was dry and boring, but it grew on me.

Yeah, maybe it will grow on me too. I'll give it another try

I never play TMFU. I Only like the songs from that when I listen to them as YCDTOA versions.

You were right, it's a good one. But those 4 songs still don't make it.

So I was having a chat with a friend at work who is fairly big into Zappa. He claims The Blue Light is his worst song. It's not for everyone, I used to not like it but now it is one of my favorites on TTR. Any opinions on this song?

I really like it a lot! When ZPZ played it in 2010, I could sing along with every word and Dweezil pointed me out for that. It's my second favourite meltdown song after Ship.

Meltdown? As in the singing style where he's all like "Oh well, so anywayyyy!" Like the stuff on TMFU and Truck Driver's Divorce? If so, love that stuff.

I haven't heard Tinseltown so much to make an opinion, but Frank once said he liked that song.

Apart from Panty Rap and Dance Party (which I don't consider real songs, and they're not super awful like people make out) TTR is a really solid album from start to finish.

I always skip "A Few Moments with Brother A. West" on TBBYNHIYL simply because it ruins the flow of that album for me.

Just listened to The Jazz Discharge Party Hats for the first time. I think in a way the value of a song like this is that it proves the opposite point of what Zappa had in mind. Specifically this line:

(Hey! It's the twentieth century...
Whatever you can do to have a good time, let's get on with it,
So long as it doesn't cause a murder...)

But that isn't really true, is it? This is a classic moral relativist fallacy, that as long as one doesn't hurt others, everything can go (as if others cannot be hurt indirectly by your example or as if hurting yourself doesn't count). The fact he probably just made the story up also detracts from his point.

I guess the real reason this song exists though is that Zappa was no longer seen as controversial by 1983 so he had to push things even further, and ended up crossing the line. Luckily, he just gave up trying to be a trouble maker and simply focused on his music for there on. Shut up and play yer guitar/ compose yer music indeed.

Don't you like his stuff as a trouble-maker? Like Absolutely Free or Money?

To a degree. But for the most part i'm just in it for the music. I think there's a fine line in pointing out that reality is filled with many absurdities and that things aren't as peachy or as perfect as we are led to believe, to trying to push the notion that reality is NOTHING but an absurdity, which is going to the opposite extreme. For instance, there's a lot of filth going on in human sexuality but there's also a lot of beauty and if there is prudery on one side, there is certainly perversity on the other. You can't just say that because perversity exists human nature is nothing but perversity, which sometimes seems to be the general idea. And not just with Zappa specifically but with a lot of modern or avant-gard thinkers as well.

The problem though is that i think Zappa was a bit too intelligent for that kind of stuff. Being a rebel, going against the grain, it is all fun and games but if you are serious about it things can get really dark. I don't think most rock musicians ever get that serious about it, including those cartoonish modern metal bands. But Zappa was different. I don't think he ever crossed that line but he could have and he certainly was aware of how far he could have gone had he wanted to. See, "staring into the abyss" is only dangerous if you are intelligent enough to understand what the abyss is. I think that's what unhinged Nietzsche in the end.

With this said, i think as far as his "trouble-making" stuff goes, i like the Freak Out! and Absolutely Free stuff the most precisely because it has a certain innocent freshness to it, and doesn't give me as much of a bad aftertaste as some of his later songs do.
