Thanks for the support. In hindsight, I felt that my question was a bit naive-sounding so I didn't mind re-stating it when he posted that response.

see, poly? I made spitball agree with me.

That sounds like some basic rap to me.

And what about Nanook Rubs It?

That one doesn't remind me of rap.

Bob Marshall: I remember in an interview around the late Seventies, you brought up the concept of "sprechstimme", a German term.
Frank Zappa: A speech-song. That means, instead of singing all the pitches of the song, you half speak it, you half sing it. It's a technique that was attributed to Schoenberg who used it in a piece called "Pierrot Lunaire". And the way it was written was: all the pitches for the soprano to sing, the ones that she was supposed to half speak, had X's on the stems. But I don't think he invented it because this is a type of vocal styling that has been used in Blues. It's also been used in other types of ethnic music. You can find it in Bulgarian music where, instead of exactly singing the note, you imply the pitch of the note, but you're really talking it. It's in between.
Bob Marshall: You started doing your talking stuff around that time when you were talking about that concept?
Frank Zappa: The first album had "sprechstimme" on it.

Well there it is...

Did I miss something here...hmmm??? :?

Well I stopped at a local watering hole Wednesday afternoon and they had a new download Jukebox, this is a pretty country and western type area and I saw that it had FZ so I played some selections since the people present are not familiar with Frank. They were not very impressed although everyone liked “Watermelon in Easter Hay”.

I played selections from “Overnight Sensation “ such as “Dirty Love”, “Camarrilo Brillo”, and “Montana”. Several people asked if it was some kind of early rap music…leave it to the neophytes to express it most clearly!

I'm a pretty open-minded person regarding most things, but I've never really considered rap music, furthermore when listening to FZ rap couldn't be further from my mind :smoke: :smurf:

You are a Grumpy Gravy.

What's the point of asking it - because this a open forum and people are interested.

You may have had this discussion 10000 times, but don't criticize others for asking it.

Stupid question - my arse.

What did you have for breakfast? - that is a stupid question

While Frank may not have been the "original rapper", he certainly was an O.G.
Let's ask The Roots when their new album "How I Got Over" drops.
Among the tracks expected to make the cut is a cover of "Peaches en Regalia."

The term sprechgesang is more closely aligned with the long used musical techniques of recitative or parlando than is sprechstimme. Where sprechgesang is used in this way, it is usually in the context of the late Romantic German operas or "music dramas" that were composed by Richard Wagner and others in the 19th century. Thus sprechgesang is often simply a German alternative to recitative.

Nonetheless, opera critics sometimes employ the term sprechgesang in a pejorative sense, using it to condemn a style of Wagnerian singing where the over-articulation of the words of a musical passage (such as an aria) chops up the passage's smooth flow.
"Shut Up "N Play Yer Guitar"
This style of singing was particularly prevalent at Germany's Bayreuth Festival in the 1890s and early 1900s, and it received the unflattering nickname of the "Bayreuth bark".
"Arf she said."
Sprechgesang is not a word that was used by the 20th-century composer Arnold Schoenberg, but it is frequently used by commentators to refer to the sprechstimme employed in some of his musical works. As such, the two terms have become interchangeable in this specific context.

Since the early 1990s in Germany, sprechgesang has gained a new pop-culture meaning of "German-language rap music".

I reckon this is rap, but reckon that someone did it before this.

Ask yourself this - "what is rap?"

I would say talking rhymically over music.

Hay that was being done since before we had recordings to see who invented it.

It was not invented it just happened.

who invented music??

No. Homer (the Greek, not Simpson) was closer, but that Caveman analogy is even more to the point, because it all started in the caves some tens of thousands years ago. You know - storytelling with rhythms and beats around the campfire. AND THEN CAME THE BEARS - NOW PEOPLE, DO YOU HEAR? AND THE TITTIES STARTED FLOPPING ALL AROUND MY EARS. Alas, no beer in those days, just bears and titties with hair.

I can't say for sure, but isn't Frank's rap in More Trouble Every Day a kind of talking blues? And that's an influence on modern rap also?
