So, FZ sliced up original tapes without making backup copies?

I don't know, but it is possible. Even Frank couldn't foresee the retromania we're living through now, where every recorded bit of the past is treated like a treasure. His thinking could be "okay, that was a good version of Wild Love, and I wanna use a section of it for the album. Tomorrow we'll make an even better performance and maybe we can use the tape of that for the Impossible Concerts series..."

FZ hacked up all the versions of Wild Love/Yo Mama from London while preparing the Sheik album.

Right, Wild Love>Yo Mama was only performed twice in London, and both versions were hacked up and utilized for Sheik. Otherwise I'm sure they would have included it somehow.
How would you know that have the stuff never been heard ever.

To the people complaining about no Wild Love/Yo Mama:

There were no versions left to use. Both performances were hacked out of the tapes for Sheik Yerbouti.

Otherwise, there's nothing left from the Odeon shows to use, so all this complaining about disc space is rather silly.

1978 01 24 - Hammersmith Odeon, London, England
150 min, Aud, B+

1978 01 27 - Hammersmith Odeon, London, England
85 min, Aud, B (part of this version is the basic track on SY)

plus it was played 1978 02 28 - Hammersmith Odeon, London, England

Check it out on there bottom page is the show.

the site also as
That date used on Sheik Yerbouti and 1978 01 27

I smell bullshit 8)

Then he'd have no real excuse at still being bitter over the 200 Motels footage being recorded over.

As far as we know there were three versions of Wild Love/Yo Mama from London 78, January 24, January 27 and February 28.

Nothing from the January 24 show appears on HO or has been identified as appearing on Sheik. Since it was the first show of the tour, it's possible FZ chose not to record it, or that there were problems with the tapes.

As far as I can tell Wild Love on Sheik is from February 28, and Yo Mama is a combination of February 28 (vocal sections), January 27 (rhythm section for the middle of the guitar solo) and the guitar solo from Neunkirchen. I guess that would still leave the Wild Love from January 27 but it's possible they didn't think they could use it without a complete version of Yo Mama to follow it.

There have been a few comments from Gail and Joe that yes, unfortunately FZ didn't always save the original tapes when he picked takes to edit, remix and in some cases overdub for his albums.

Are there really overlapping takes on SY and HO? Didn't they say somewhere that these are different performances?

None of the HO performances are the ones used as basic tracks for SY.

It has been decades since I read the liner notes on my SY LP, but I thought some of these performances were the basic tracks. I actually thought that made HO a more useful artifact. Maybe it is me, but I don't have the time or the inclination to do that kind of research anymore...

Most of SY is from London, but not the same nights as the takes on HO.

I like the vocals on HO - especially the harmony singing. Some times the guys in the 1978 band sound like dead ringers for Tweedy and O'Rourke in Loose Fur, Born Again in the USA!

A killer album btw - everybody should have one (copy) 8)

1 I stated that just above

2 Frank said in interview it cost $400.000 too make a band sound like his so it's not like they first timers and 24 days before just about the same songs where played so why not tape first show even same musicians

3 Tell you the truth it could be from shows that have not been bootlegged or officel so impossible too say

4 Yep sounds correct also they may have been damaged or ever lost
