I don't like em.

Moon is the only one that gets it and that idiot talking about rap is just annoying.

I thought the "new piano people " was a bad idea. Doesn't work for me either. One of the reasons I can't accept CP3 as Zappa's masterpiece as the family and I guess, Frank himself, wanted to proclaim near the time of his death. There's some great music on there no doubt, but not his masterpiece imho.

I REALLY love this music! The new people just don't work though. Should have left it alone. It just doesn't have the same feel.

To me, "This Ain't CNN" and the new piano characters et al moves the story into the '80's-'90's, taking a global approach to the same 'sentiment' as "drums are too noisy with no corners to hide in" and from a different pov, imo

I think the 'new' piano people definitely have a place in there.
they're bringing the whole piece (from the 1968 voices) to a new period in time (closer to phaze iii of civilization, if you will).

I have to confess, though, that when I first got the abum (when it was released in 1994), they were difficult getting used to, but they quickly grew on me.

the 'idiot talking about rap' is the actor michael rappaport. he was moon's boyfriend at the time.
and, still, I believe, a friend of the zappa family.
(and, the rest of the new voices are, of course, members of the ensemble modern.)

Most of the voices of the piano people were recorded in the 60s, like the ones that are also in Lumpy Gravy.
Some of the vocal sections were recorded in 1991, like the things Moon says and the speech in Dutch, German and Turkish. Huck doesn't like those vocals. To me they appear to be too scripted, but it's barely a nuisiance enough to think of considering the rest of the album!

I think EIHN works well, with voices and all. It's the closest the Ensemble Modern got to a Mothers of Invention album, in the vein of Uncle Meat or Weasels Ripped My Flesh, albeit on a lower energy level.

I'm not so fond of the new voices in CPiii, and particularly don't like the "ain't CNN" episode. If that had been cut out, maybe the rest would have blended in better.

I believe that the new voices are almost "objectively" less interesting than the old piano people. On the old recordings you get a snapshot from a very specific period in history, the hippie era. The voices act and project themselves at the same time. These recordings satisfy Andre Bazin's demand for a documentary quality in cinema (and you could call this work aural cinema). The documentary element is both less interesting and less prominent in the new recordings. The Nineties piano people too often sound like mediocre actors trying to breathe life into a stiff script.

I like the music, though, and disc 1 is near perfect.

No, if I were, I'd say "This shows that Frank Zappa knows nothing about nothing!"
