Hey guys, I have a problem buying zappa albums. Some of his stuff i absolutely love, and then other stuff i have a hard time getting into. I just recently bought about 5 albums, and i only really like one of them. So i will tell you what i like, and what i already have, and i would appreciate if you guys could make some suggestions on similar albums i would like. Here is what i have already:

Joe's Garage ( favorite album)
Over-Night sensation ( camarillo brillo is currently my favorite zappa song)
Bongo fury ( love carolina hardcore ecstacy)
Freak out ( cant really get into this album)
Lather ( cant get into)
Roxy & elsewhwere ( love more trouble everyday)
we're only in it for the money
Apostrophe ( love it)
Lump Gravy ( cant get into)
Sheik yerbouti ( love it)
Weasels ripped my flesh ( cant get into)
200 Motels ( cant get into)
Hot rats ( love it)

So anyway, i would love another album similar to Joe's garage, and like i said camarillo brillo is my current fav.
Please suggest something similar! Thanks

Seems you like the more song-oriented stuff. Try "One Size Fits All", "Zoot Allures", "You Are What You Is" and "Them or Us" and maybe "Zappa in New York" (even though you said you don't care for Lather) and "Tinseltown Rebellion" for live albums. I also recommend all of the "You Can't Do That Onstage Anymore" discs. Good fun!

The Torture Never Stops DVD
Burnt Weeny Sandwich (features some tracks from the Hot Rats sessions)
Chunga's Revenge (also features some tracks from the Hot Rats sessions)

as killugly notes, the preference is guitar/lyrics so definately one size fits all , zoot & ziny; hot rats is a good anchor between the old mothers of invention albums and anything that followed ... the early moi albums were harder to get into for me partly because the sound & production quality is inferior to the mid-70's or later albums

for lather, you could try ripping all the sleep dirt tracks in the original lp order [missing 1]; keep listening until you start to warm up to it, then do the same with all the studio tan tracks, then orchestral favs

I agree with everything that has been mentioned and I'll add Imaginary Diseases and Waka/Jawaka.

Keep trying the albums you don't get into. Someday those strange little ditties will burrow into your brain and they'll become favorites.

I predict that you wont get into Them Or Us and You Are What You Is.
You will like some of Zoot Allures
You will like most or all of One Size Fits All
You will like at least half of ZINY

if Joe's Garage is your favorite, the above are good choices but you should also get Tinseltown Rebellion soon.

It sounds like downer mydnyte has it all figured out for you. Of course, you will decide for yourself and as Philmore said the other ones may grow on you.

please do not skip over the flo and eddie era. live at the fillmore is a classic, and just another band from la and chunga's revenge have some good toons.

it sounds like you're like me, i like zappa's constructed songs, and am not really into the the improvised noodly stuff, or the noise music.

I suggest getting a vinyl copy of "Money", dropping a few hits of acid and reporting back here after listening to it. 8)

It seems you're not yet really into his farther out stuff. I was the same way listening to Frank but that far out stuff will grow on you. My suggestion is buy everything or anything you can get. You will find things from each album that you will feel connections with. If it sounds too "strange" for you, try not to bail on it permanetly after one listen.

Well, ALL the albums you have listed are great, personally with that many Zappa albums I'd play them a few more times, try and get 'into' them!
But I do recommend you get:

Tinsel Town Rebellion (Great Live Zappa)
Chunga's Revenge (Though you may find some of it hard to get into.)
You Cant Do That On Stage Anymore: Sampler (A great compilation of tracks from all 6 YCDTOSA albums)
Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch (Great albums but again, Might be a little hard to get into)

Also, If you like Hot Rats try FZ's other Jazz fusion albums;

Waka/Jawaka
The Grand Wazoo
Sleep Dirt
Jazz From Hell

None of them sound much like Hot Rats but they're all great and they're all kinnda Jazz-fusion so, yeah, I recommend you give that lot a try.
Personally I like all of Zappa's work from his most Avant-Garde Albums right through to his 'Normal' Rock albums, and the ones I have listed aren't necessarily my favourite Zappa albums, They're just the albums It seems like you'd probably like.

Anyway, Hope this helps :)

Quote from the initial thread....

Hey guys, I have a problem buying zappa albums. Some of his stuff i absolutely love, and then other stuff i have a hard time getting into.

I grew up listening to Zappa's work, album by album,
year by year. Every new release was listened to and
valued above or below the previous album released.

New generations now have the entire catalogue to deal with.
So varied, so different, so just listen to it all and follow the stuff you like.
