Let's get an early start on this. March Madness 2012 will be Best Zappa Song instead of Best Zappa Solo. This opens up the competion to songs without significant Zappa solos, but does not exclude songs with solo's. So just list your favorite 40 and we will assemble the brackets based on frequency of votes with a little bit of judgement factored in. The nominations wiill be kept open until the end of the year. BTW: this is going to be difficult. I'm still working on my list.

The final 16 from the solo contest are automatic entries:

Inca Roads
Willie the Pimp
Po-Jama People
Ship Arriving Too Late
Black Napkins
Muffin Man
Son of Mr. Green Genes
Son of Orange County
Zoot Allures
Sleep Dirt
Filthy Habits
Holiday in Berlin….
Watermelon
Andy
SUPYG Some More
Son of Orange County/More Trouble Every Day*

*Single entry for this tourney

Question for the Committee:

Song - Does this mean that we are talking about pieces with lyrics or are we using the word song in a more general form meaning any composition at all?

Nominations do not have to be in order. I would say any named "track" on any official Zappa release is a potential candidate. Open to suggestions if anyone disagrees.

Throw the two finalists from last time in there: King Kong (Uncle Meat) and Peaches (Hot Rats).

Best song? Holy fuck. That's like asking me to pick a favorite of all 3 of my kids.

But... in this case right now I gotta say Zomby Woof (OS)

Hey Rahdley - do you want a specific album version, like fr'instance My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama, Weasels Ripped My Flesh - or just the song title?

Yes. I think naming the album/version is important.

My favourite Zappa composition is "Regyptian Strut" (the original version, as in 'Sleep dirt' Lp, not the remix).

My favourite Zappa song is "Packard goose". (studio version).

Hope that helps. :|

hmm... I'm kinda stuck on this. for me, song is music with words to it.
so, I am going to make up a list of zappa songs. no instrumentals.

You can, actually - the 1984 Berkeley performance is on iTunes, BTBIII, in a fairly good recording.

Edit: Mistrijah's corrected his typo, and I withdraw my query 8)
