An alternative version of The Mothers Of Invention "Freak Out" album has been released on a vinyl bootleg in a limited edition of 500 copies.

It is said to be a different sounding version, "taken from two original mastertape stereo mixdowns which were intended for use in the first edition of Freak Out on the 10th of april in 1966".

The order of the tracks is different as well...

side a

1. wowie zowie
2. you didn't try to call me
3. trouble comin' every day
4. no heart
5. how could i be such a fool

side b

1. i'm not satisfied
2. motherly love
3. who are the brain police?
4. any way the wind blows
5. hungry freaks, daddy

side c

1. you're probably wondering why i'm here
2. go cry on somebody else's shoulder (zappa, collins)
3. help, i'm a rock

side d

1. cream cheese

Just got around to listening to this thing in it's entirety again and thought that it deserves it's own thread. I really like this a lot. If you haven't heard it yet do yer self a favor and check it out here................

Love the irony of a "limited edition" bootleg.

I've been told that this LP is a scam and that all but one song are the same mixes as the original LP/MOFO PO

The person who started this thread should know the difference.

I scored the Freak-Out CD,perfect condition, for $5 bucks about 2 months ago.I've got it on heavy rotation at my house. This music stands the test of time and this time no skips, hisses and pops as with my vinyl original Freak-Out record.Don't get me wrong I love those hisses and pops, but it's great to have this masterpiece both ways! Now everyone FREAK-OUT again! 8)

Scott Parker says - don't buy it, cos it's not legit, but it's so good you need to get it some way or other...

By freak co-incidence I found this LP in a used vinyl store in my dirty old hometown. It is pretty special - the best sounding (and looking) bootleg I've come across since the Edison Läther box.

The track order is a significant difference, and I do believe it's Frank's first version of the album, hence says a lot about his thinking when you compare it to Freak Out! as we know it. Wowie Zowie is significantly different, the "since you first took the shots" line is intact, and the sound is good - some (including Parker) say it's the best sounding Freak Out! yet.

This sure is something else than your average shoddy bootleg. Could easily have been a Zappa Records vinyl release.

this is pretty much the case with a lot of boots. limited pressings. some of the ones from the 70s are going for insane money.

If I recall right word is that "Help I'm A Rock" includes the line "since you first took the shots" censored from the released version, and there is a difference somewhere in "Wowie Zowie." Haven't heard this thing though so someone else needs to confirm.

You can check it for yourself from the podcast, but I might add that the "significant difference" in Wowie Zowie is a slight musique concrète break in the middle of the otherwise inane, baby-friendly track (a description I'm sure Frank would have approved)...

What did they say about September 1966? edit it was April said not September.
He said best sound and also said 2006 freakout was also :D
The big difference Wowie Zowie track goes louder after second verse music stop for second or so and somebody makes noise with mouth and Zappa says what sounds like press it twice.
