Hello. I was learning the solo from Inca Roads (the One Size Fits All version) by ear, and I got caught on a snag about 1/8th the way through. I was wondering if anyone knew where I can find the solo written out. Or atleast, the key changes in the solo. Thank you.

Ask Steve Vie, I'm sure he's got it scribbled down somewhere.

The One Size Fits All guitar songbook was just released from Hal Leonard. I ordered mine from amazon last night.

Well, the Guitar book contains quite a bit of SU&PYG solos doesn't it? Yes, five of them come from "Inca Roads", but they're all 1979 versions, I guess the harmonic backdrop is still about the same, but if you specifically wanted to learn the OSFA solo, then I guess the OSFA songbook mentioned above would be your best bet. Then there's always the tried and true method of slowing down the recording and working out the solo slowly but surely itself. In the old days it was like the variation of speed on the vinyl (or tape) player, but now you can just take an audio file and mess around with Audacity or some other wave edit program.

Song is in the key of G,1f sharp the vamp C chord then D chord.the solo is 3.36 seconds so 1/8 would be 19.5 seconds,if was 30 seconds you was stuck it would be Hammer on with the pick, there is a interview around on the web 1977 guitar player called OSFA and Zappa says so.

Edit
found this tab and write up from mag By Andy aledort the transcriber for HR and ! books.

The OSFA version at least, is in G Major if you have to pick a traditional key, but Zappa's doing it in C Lydian, that is, following the G Major scale but emphasising the root on the fourth step, which is C. End of theory lesson.

I'm not saying the whole of Inca Roads is in G Major Mr Pernickety Cleon. When I say I'm a composer I'm not big noting myself, just pointing out that I've spent a significant percentage of my life studying music in the way recommended by FZ, I bought my own books and used the library and basically taught myself. But, when I comment on stuff here I don't harp on about it.

The guy is enquiring about the solo which is over a C Lydian or D Mixolydian vamp, so I restricted myself to talking about that. Even there, Zappa throws in the odd off scale note.

If you're going to question my grasp of the piece, the opening song is over a C root, but even that is not all C Lydian. The harmony goes all over the place. For example, there's a section where you can play a C Major chord followed by an Ab Major chord with C in the bass. On a guitar, just try strumming on the middle four strings C E G C and C Eb Ab C alternately back and fourth just to get some of the feel of the opening. The "was" in "or was it something diff ' rent" is on an F natural not an F#. The "vehicle to land" at the end of the song part is Eb Db C. Also, the seriously fast Inca Riff supported by Ruth's skill on tuned percussion is clearly not in G Major.

Yeah it says in my link  that in a key there be Start here and start there still in the same key waster of time.

Like you said " Zappa throws in the odd off scale note"Ghost notes i call them that is what i concentrate on other than a scale which be in a musical key anyway.

I was asking you to be specific. You said I'd gone wrong. Where is it that you think I've gone wrong? (I know - answering this post)

My first post in this thread had nothing to do with you. I responded after seeing two other posters mentioning other keys and I chimed in just in case without even reading back the rest of the thread and without casting abuse at anyone. You replied with "Get your books back out", so then I called you pernickety (heavy duty abuse I suppose  ), other than that the rest of that post had no abuse in it at all. Then you tell me I've gone wrong and again, without abuse, I asked where. You're still not telling me where and now I'm "a asshole" and a "patronizing pathetic piece of shit". I'm not the one being abusive.

You are one of the reasons I sometimes stay away from what would otherwise be some of the most interesting threads to me.

So your telling me that you have never seen heard or done, lets slow it down so you may understand. When somebody pick up a musical instrument plays a note scale or key then with their voice try and control so they voice or maybe the playing of the instrument to get them in harmony.Which is fine though playing a song and the musical instrument is not supposed too be in harmony with the voice is Crap and that is what you said too do :smoke:

Maybe you haven't by the looks of things.
