I think it is a catalogue announcement jayp. But I wouldn't be surprised if there was a release involved too, to spur sales.

Let's not pick on Gail - she's putting more great music out then most - guys there is a limited amount in that vault - she has limited funds to process it - lets give her a thumbs up for what she has done...I think she is doing OK - lets hope it's something to do with the entire catalog

release of the catalog = new fans = that means new music down the road

how? this makes zero sense. re-releasing the catalog will not just make new people miraculously start flocking to buy it.

just like us - if they hear it - they will be hooked.

Unless it gets released - they aint never going to hear it. If the fan base doesn't expand - it just won't pay to invest in new releases.

It's just my theory...I might be wrong.

Whenever I go into my local indy record store (Exile of Main St) - the owner asks me what is going on with the catalog.

I recently was in Cutlers which is located in downtown New Haven - they used to be the largest indy record store in Connecticut - their Zappa section is empty.

Maybe 100 years from now FZ will be re-discovered and there will be a new wave of releases from the vault but at 59 - I don't think I could wait.

All I want is new releases - whatever it takes to get them - so be it.

I am only in it for the music.

Jayp, Bobby is right. I am 58, don't know your age but how much can we be counted on to buy more stuff. Besides which I have every damn CD and almost every LP (switched to CDs only in the '80s). They have to sell the stuff. The Doors must have re-released their catalogue 5 times, same with any number of others, or at least keep the better-selling titles in print.

The new releases are going to be more and more obscure, no one will be interested in the ROXY DVD who hasn't heard R&E or YCDTOSA 2. WOIIFTM, FO, HR, UM, Apostrophe or OS are likely the ones, at minimum, to provide a glimpse into what we all fell in love with. I think Ryko did good by Frank, don't care what anyone else thinks. You need a label and some distribution - and unfortunately a lot of that will be digital downloads, but that is the business and that is how you market.

The Beatles held out against Apple, what did it get 'em? Nothing. But when they put the catalogue up, they got heard by a new group of fans and what's good will likely be good in the future. Don't tell me Hot Rats will not sell if it is out there to sell.

I was in my late teens and early twenties when the Rykodisc CDs started coming out. That made me more and more interested. The same can happen now. The numbers may or may not be significant, but "zero" sense? Uh, no.

the entire catalog hasn't been out of print for that long and most titles are/were still available somehow during that time. these reissues will not do much to spark sales plus there are no more record stores anymore for people to go and physically see them. it's a different world now

Whatever the deal is/was with Rykodisc (I just can't be bothered trying to remember or google) I have to say that they helped me build my Zappa cd collection pretty quick. Don't forget, this was before the interwebs and reliable/accurate information was a rare and elusive word-of-mouth type of thing.

I don't care what they do or how they do it as long as I can get my grubby paws on anything I don't already have on cd and vinyl.

New releases = stuff we've probably already heard in a slightly different version. I get what Jayp is saying. The music is already there. I think ZPZ helps some.

all i want are the original LP mixes available on CD, but I doubt universal will go to the trouble of finding the originals.

The comments above were not about wanting it bad but about those who don't know they want it yet. Ten years ago you could walk in to almost any shop that sold CDs and find a significant number of zappa titles. We had stores here with two whole columns of FZ CDs next to supposedly more popular musicians you could barely notice. That made people look up and think.

I'll never forget the first time I walked into the Virgin Megastore 20 years ago in Oxford Street in London where there was a whole damn row of FZ stuff. That's how I came to buy TBBYNHIYL and MAJNH. People wondering through that store would have had to wonder who the hell the guy was. Now a days, I talk to teenagers in schools and they haven't even heard of his name.

Zappa made up for his supposed lack of marketing appeal by being a marketing master himself. I'm not sure why people marketing his stuff haven't learnt from that. Even though I get it with all the balloons and toilet seat hats, I just think that Zappa studied the main generation he was selling to - at the time - and the ZFT needs to study the main one they could be selling to right now - it's a different kettle of fish. See - even that saying dates me. My teenage kids have no interest in buying CDs, but they do hassle me for money to spend on iTunes - go figure.

This is intriguing.. CDs and DDs... That's one new path for the catalog with the DDs. Is Gail in on this? One thing's for sure - another round with the 1993 approved masters would be a wasted opportunity. Us old rotten hats wouldn't touch that - who needs another 1984 Ruben or 1993 approved Zoot Allures? But could you resist a new round of Zappa if they finally decided to release the LP masters on CD?

I would only buy the CDs again if they were identical to the original vinyl. I wouldn't go for them all, just the ones that were drastically different.
