I have several boots. Maybe I can send them to Gail. One of the best is Zoot Allures in Paris. Great Black Napkins piece.

Boots are made for walking. Tip.

Did anyone else here read Finnegans Wake?

Would u recommend it, especially for non english speaking readers?
Did u read it completeley?
Do u need to find out the different layers of meanings of the words to have fun with this book?
I always was interested in this book but never dared to read it. There is a german translation, the guy needed 20 years to translate it.

Finnegans Wake is fascinating, but pretty unintelligible. I have been obsessive about it and read it from cover to cover, but with too little understanding, alas. I expect to understand more when I get old and wise - in about 200 years.

It's always entertaining to hear Joyce's readings from the Wake. And the pieces he published as Work in Progress are a good starting point. John Cage said that Finnegans Wake didn't live up to the promise of Joyce's Work in Progress, for him.

Finnegans Wake is about nothing more than the words that are in it.

Here's the source of my largely irrelevant association --

This the way to the museyroom. Mind your hats goan in! Now yiz are in the Willingdone Museyroom. This is a Prooshious gunn. This is a ffrinch. Tip. This is the flag of the Prooshious, the Cap and Soracer. This is the bullet that byng the flag of the Prooshious. This is the ffrinch that fire on the Bull that bang the flag of the Prooshious. Saloos the Crossgunn! Up with your pike and fork! Tip. (Bullsfoot! Fine!) This is the triplewon hat of Lipoleum. Tip. Lipoleumhat. This is the Willingdone on his same white harse, the Cokenhape. This is the big Sraughter Willingdone, grand and magentic in his goldtin spurs and his ironed dux and his quarterbrass woodyshoes and his magnate's gharters and his bangkok's best and goliar's goloshes and his pullupon easyan wartrews. This is his big wide harse. Tip.

And some samples of Joyce reading --

It seems someone has taken umbrance to that video as it has that scrambled YouTube type download protection all over it.

As far as translating Joyce is concerned, I think it's pointless. The only way a non english speaking person (and many an english speaking person as well) is going to understand it is to appreciate the source of its poetry and the only way you can do that is to listen to and study the people he's "parodying" in the first place. It has a huge cultural context and you can't just simply translate that.

"We now romp through a period of pure lyricism of shame-bred music...evidenced
by such words in distress as 'I cream for thee, Sweet Margareen', and the more
hopeful 'O Margareena! O Margareena! Still in the bowl is left a lump of
gold!'"

---James Joyce, "Finnegan's Wake", p.164 (Penguin Books, Centennial Edition)

You have boots. I have herpes. I doubt if Gail wants either.
