What confuses me is that this argument seems to be splitting hairs. It seems to me that both pbuzby and Wen simply used the term "original mix" as a shorthand to indicate that the master that is being used was derived from the 1969 analog master rather than the 1987 Ryko remix master. Yet, you found it necessary to correct them both, using Gail's own words as a basis.

I understand that you and Wen have had conflicts, which explains the tone of your reply to him. I give you credit for being respectful to pbuzby, who, as most of us know, is a gentleman.

It seems to me that you, Wen, and Thinman agree more than you disagree, but there are minute points that the three of you just aren't budging on. In addition, it appears that you feel the need to insult each other.

For me, it comes down to this question: How does it help the prospective buyer of the new Hot Rats CD to tell them that it is inaccurate to refer to it as the original mix?

Very good. Very well said, though I don't know what "minute points" you're talking about in my case. My point is clear as day in my first post, as is Pat's, and there's really nothing more to say about it. Perhaps if TCS wasn't so obnoxious about spouting off incorrect information, I wouldn't feel the need to call him an assmunch.

i just compared the Hot Rats 1969 Bizarre US LP to the 2008 Classic Vinyl LP

There's NO difference in the mix AT ALL!!

The Old Masters LP also sounds very good even with the digi-verb. It's not as bad as a lot of people make it out to be especially when compared to some of the Ryko abominations.

The very first blue label pressing has a slightly smeared right channel, perhaps some CSG encoding? The Classic LP has a wider and more centered soundstage. Otherwise they sound very similar sonically. The CD is gonna be tight.

When he moved onto the CD versions, he added digital compression in addition to the reverb, which made them sound significantly worse than the Old Masters LP's.

True. Most of the Old Masters LPs sound really good.

the reverb filter on my preamp works pretty well on the ryko cds, with the unexpected side effect of digitally decompressing the mix, which results in a pretty dry sound stage overall
