I guess unusual Zappa song is a little bit of an oxymoron, but a few stand out from the others. Here is one:

It Just Might be a One Shot Deal- Waka/Jawaka

Blessed Relief.

Its so un-Zappa, but at the same time an absolutely beautiful piece of music.

There's plenty. But off the top of my head, I'd go with Jonestown...

the reason i say this is because it sounds nothing like what you think FZ would play. if you were unfamiliar with his music and heard this track expecting the rest of his catalog to resemble this, you'd be disappointed.

This is a hard one, because unusual/diverse is the trademark of Zappa. Rubber Shirt? - Although it's one of several xenochronous pieces, it has a pretty unique sound world with the beautiful "interplay" of bass and drums.

It Might Just Be One-Shot Deal is a very odd song.

i took the title of this thread more at "the weirdest of the weird" and less at "uncharacteristic". so for me the two titles that come to mind are debra kadabra (try playing this for a group of folks who've never heard fz or cb), and dio fa. dio fa sends shivers down my spine every time i hear it. in a good way.

Yes, I agree with Sleepy about Dio Fa. It just KILLS me every time I listen to it........really loud on a rainy night with speeded-up clouds, in the basement. It's the only FZ song that is creepy.

I still think Calvin is pretty unusual.....

when i think unusual i think the most un-zappa like. that's why i picked IMJBAOSD, because it has some much diverity in it, a country vibe, a yiddish accent etc... plus it sticks out like a sore thumb on whats a mostly jazz oriented record

How about Lucille Has Messed my Mind Up? I know Jeff Simmons co-wrote it, but I think it counts, expecially since the version on Joe's is entirely different from the original.

That's a very interesting concept - i.e. what was the most un- Zappalike track?
How 'bout "Village of the Sun".

A sweet, nostalgic, personal song.

most of you are missing the real meaning of the word "unusual" here

Depends on the context.
