To me it's not a comparison. Shut Up and Play spans more time, more variety of lineups, more editing, etc.. It is, at least to me, more than just a collection of solos. I think Trance Fusion and Guitar can be compared, in which case I prefer Guitar.

I preferred Shut Up... for the first year or so after I bought Guitar but the latter grew on me in a big way. Now I can't decide.

Trance Fusion...I guess I'll concede it isn't as good as either of those but has some brilliant tracks, and shows a more adventurous side of his playing from 1984 than Guitar did.

When I'm in guitar mode the Guitar and Shut Up series are on heavy rotate I love 'em all....Trancefusion is a favorite in the car, but not so much at home, I'm not sure why :?

Same here on the first two. Just got Trance-Fusion, and will be studying it this weekend.

SUnPYG wins hands down. It was a fucking onslaught of FZ madness when it came out.
Nothing like it came before or after.

Yeah! No shit! When I finally got my grubby little hands on the box set (1981?), I drove all my friends mad for a year because it was the ONLY music i listened to.
At home, in the Car, on the Beach...Just couldn't get enough. My mother called it "The Devil's Music". And She was not a religious woman!

SUnPYG remains the only FZ album that gets a "Holy shit!" response from people who think zappa culminated with Hot Rats.

I prefer "Guitar", but mostly for nostalgic reasons, as it was the second Zappa album I bought!

It would be interesting to make an online "Jaypfunkizator" (vulgarizer?) software, to wich one could input a normal sentence, and it would come out full of "fucks", "assholes" and such in it. :-D Anyone? (How sad when someone's personality, someone's gestures, words are so predictable... ;-) )

Hate to pick favourites between these two but I have a soft spot for Canard Du Jour. FZ didn't work much with solo violinists, but his violin tracks are all fantastic!

shut up 'n play yer guitar.
because it has arthur barrow & vinnie colaiuta on most of the tracks.
and (maybe because of that amazing backing), some of zappa's best guitar work*.

and, because of "canard du jour"
fz—bouzouki
jean-luc ponty—baritone violin

*in my opinion

Andrew Dice Clay made millions off that same type of shit. Not endorsing, just making an observation.

Can't really compare 'em. Two different worlds. Spent countless hours listening to both.

As for Trance-Fusion, only a couple of solos really move me. Bowling On Charen, which
is fantastic! And After Dinner Smoker.

I like the title piece a lot - both FZ's solo and the way the backing vamp seems like it's about to fall apart but never does. (I guess this is when Scott and Chad were fighting.)

A tough call - I adore them both but if push came to shove I'd go with Shut Up

Yes, I'd go with Shut Up
