Frank Zappa, in the liner notes of the Mothers of Invention album "We're Only in It for the Money", recommends reading the short story* before listening to the song "The Chrome Plated Megaphone of Destiny".

Definitely not. I'm not exactly sure what the fuck kind of process goes into creating a musique concrete piece (if this even qualifies as so, alot of it is just weird shit and not necessarily tape manipulation), but to my ears it's definitely got an overall intention and theme, as abstract as that may be (FZ's book reccomendation aside).

I think musique concrete is generally regarded as sequenced tape splicing or layering, which sounds -to my ears- a lot like what is going on in this piece.

Definitely, but what would you classify the part say where it's just creepy piano chords and what sounds like someone smashing an acoustic guitar? Just abstract orchestral type shit or does musique concrete go beyond the process and into the aesthetics too?

Well, it comes across as a hybrid -I would say- of Stockhausen type minimalism and musique concrete, as with many Zappa pieces, it can be hard to categorise (if you feel the need to do so).

Exactly. Although, this can probably be said about many composers. Once you open yourself up to the possibilities of genre being a compositional variable, how do you categorise the results? Of course, I don't think that matters, it still comes down to taste in the end. If you are a jazz purist (even that is seriously problematic) and someone tells you they're a jazz composer, you still may not like their work.

Zappa's music is eclectic. Firstly, I prefer eclectic music because I get rapidly bored with single genre music and secondly FZ is my favourite eclectic composer. I like TCPMOD and similar stuff that he created.

It's the one song I can never get myself to listen to completely,
Don't get me wrong, I love WOIIFTM, but this song I just can not enjoy.

However, I do listen to Revolution 9 from The Beatles from time to time and always enjoy that one.
Maybe it's somehow more accesible than TGPMOD, who knows ?

I like this alot and think that it is an integral part of the whole album, it's like listening to FO without side four, Roxy without the Bebop Tango, Live In New York without the purple lagoon. The albums get you to a certain point then they just go beyond, it a real head trip.

Gotta admit, I've never sat through the uncle meat film excerpts. Not even once.

But Plastic Megaphone isn't a terribly long piece, so I really can't understand why someone would flip the switch off of it. and besides that it's clearly a very labored piece; WOIIFTM would be a terribly different album without it.

I've listened to it many many times, however i've never understood the connection with Kafka' short story. Maybe FZ meant "The Metamorphosis"? That could make sense. :P

"Chrome", the piece that I was referring to, is 6 minutes, not 40 minutes long.

It is not pointless because it's an actual piece of music, not excerpts of film dialogue.

I have listened to the film excerpts on the UM CD two or three times. It says more about how Ryko never had a clue than it says about Frank. There had to be a shitload of outtake musical pieces from the UM recording that we could have got, but Ryko thought we were all goofball enough to care about the girl in the shower with her clothes on.

On Chrome, since I listen to it now as a two-fer with LG on the Ryko disc, I find it is a great segue from WOIIFTM to LG and almost wonder if Frank was trying to show his two-sided compositional nature with it.

There's a great bit called Would You Like a Snack on the expanded JA disc of Crown of Creation that shows that FZ was involved in tape experiments with other artists at the time.
