Obviously someone with a hobby trying very hard.

Rule #1 for ambitious hobby artworkers: Stuff every square millimeter of your graphical concoction with as many objects and whirlings as you can possibly do, so everyone will know you can really draw --

Rule #2: Make the persons depicted in it look like Patty Smith at age 100, 'cause this will give your art a lot of character!

-- And why has FZ a huge dick for his nose? Also, I'd rather have that little BWS replica in the back for a cover, since I never understood the ZFT's penchant for creating imagery advocating Frank in a f#cked-up tight-trouser Hair Metal pose. I assume Dweezil must dig it a lot.

Looking forward to the music, Hate the cover. Hated the Congress cover too. Honestly, I have no idea what people would like about this cover.

I have the feeling that the music is gonna be phantastic -- I must re-fold the covers for Road Tapes and this one, then --

-- OR Maybe not.
Jeeez, it just dawned on me that it indeed could be another spoken-word release and the well-known tracks serving as interludes only. Hence the phantasy titles. What a pity.

And didn't I hear FZ using the phrase 'The subcutaneous peril' in one of his old interviews, just recently?

I don't really think it's spoken-word, some of the songtitles defenitely sound like they are music:

Mozart Piano Sonata In Bb, The Walking Zombie Music, Music From The Big Squeeze

And "The Subcutaneous Peril" was planned to be on the "Just another band from L.A." Double LP.

Edit:
Maybe some of these are guitar-solos, the guitar-lps always had strange song-names

So has anyone ascertained the voracity of this announcement? Zappa Records? Does that mean it's not a UME release? That question, BTW, is not that clear cut because the UME releases have the Zappa Records stamp on them. I notice that Läther is available for preorder but I can't find a Finer Moments preorder anywhere.

Pretty sure it is music

Looks like a MOI comp FZ put together in 1972

here are hints that this would be a 1972 Mothers Of Invention compilation project. Here are some more recording contracts (including the "Pumped And Waxed" one), all dated on June 26, 1972, whether they're recorded in Mayfair Studios, 1967 ("Music From The Big Squeeze"), Criteria Studios, Miami, 1969 ("You Never Know Who Your Friends Are"), The Ark, Boston, 1969 ("Uncle Rhebus"), or Zappa's basement, date unknown ("Pumped And Waxed"):

another clue -

You Never Know Who Your Friends Are

Performances | Comments | Conceptual Continuity
FZ album(s) in which song has appeared:

unreleased? -- recorded at Criteria Studios, Miami, FL, c. February, 1969

Comments:
Extracted information from an auctioned document (see scan below)

Name and Address of Studio: Criteria
Employer's name and: Warner Bros Records
Leader's name: Frank Zappa
Name of Artist or Group: The Mothers
No. of Minutes: 2.20
TITLES OF TUNES: You Never Know Who Your Friends Are
EMPLOYEE'S NAME:
Frank Zappa
Roy Estrada
Don Preston
Jim C. Black
Arthur D. Tripp III
John Gardner
Buzz Gardner
Ian Underwood
James E. Sherwood
Lowell George

random thoughts

Probably one side of the unreleased multiple-LP collection "The History And Collected Improvisations Of The Mothers Of Invention". Parts are recorded at The Royal Albert Hall in London in 1969; parts are studio recording.
Here are the made up titles from the traders -

Albert Hall Spoken Introduction
Chamber Music Piece 1
Mozart Ballet (parts on YCDTOSA5)
Some Zany MOI Bullshit
Chamber Music Piece
(I like the stuff from this tape - there are also tapes of two of the other discs out there)

Also - from February 16, 1969, The Ballroom, Stratford CT Skweezit Skweezit Skweezit on the Mystery Disc -

The Subcutaneous Peril - Is known as a solo from Carnigie Hall (from the 2 disc version of Just Another Band From LA - not released as such) but it could be something else. Sometimes FZ recycled titles - (IF this is The History...it was pre 1971).

My guess is this is something he broke down from the set - maybe added something "new" (1971) and set it aside.

As we already have seen - Understanding America really only has 1 unique track.
This could have been all unique material when originally put together - but over the years some things have come out officially and unofficially.

God only knows what FZ had in the vault - he was constantly working there 18 hours a day/night when not on tour - constantly arranging - rearranging and then moving onto something else. We will probably never hear 95% of the contents.

I don't like the cover but I purchase cd's for the music - if I purchased it for the artwork I'd have Roxy Music, Flash, HWA - Tina Turner etc.

When I place the cd's in a rack - all I see is the side or spine as I said.

I'm pleased to read the news, although it does seem to be a guessing game as to what kind of release this is. Will it cover a large chunk of years & lineups? Will it be mix & match of guitar solos & songs? Whose song titles are they? Maybe there will come a point in which untitled works will either be named "untitled #" or have a name assigned to it from THE FAMILY!

Thumbs down for the cover art.

I'm going to go ahead and agree that the album cover is pretty cool (which I also thought of congress shall pass no law) different strokes I guess

*SNAT! That's it -- I couldn't put my finger on it, thanks Bobby! These are a bunch of very enlightening observations regarding the other tracks, too. I like the thoughts about the Albert Hall show.

'Mothers Improvs' was my very first thought, too, but I was a bit unsure because of the presumed track timings for this release (6 tracks per disc would mean an average length of 6-7 minutes per track, at least) -- My prayers that you're right, Bob.

I'm almost sure I saw the links in a buried thread way back when -- Were you lucky enough to track them down somewhere around here? There are one or two of them up on IINK, though.

So since we have a tracklist, I'm going to assume it's a UM release which will be available in chain stores, and not a Barfko Swill-only release. Will pre-order ASAP.

It's not on offer anywhere for preorder. Which makes it a different situation to Understanding America which was on preorder as a UME release a long time in advance. Everyone's quoting someone else, if no one can find an original source within UME or the ZFT to substantiate the officiality of this release, where did this rumour come from in the first place?

Can't say, but Idiot Bastard posted the original, and he's been pretty accurate. Maybe an e-mail somewhere?

There is no mention of UME, in the context of this alleged release, on his news page and he certainly hasn't mentioned them here in this regard ...

Hey, Idiot Bastard, any comments?

My guess is we get to deal with MUSIC TODAY again. Road Tapes was up for preorder within a week of release.

First mentioned at All Music

That Music Tap snippet mentions Läther and Finer Moments together. Läther is already on preorder at Amazon.
