I know its just further from the Helsinki topic but I have to chuck this in ---

My son comes home from school the other night - he's in 7th grade (13 years old and a Zappa fan) - he was pissed off at his Texas History teacher. We live in Austin. His teacher was making fun of quotes during class. Not sure why. BUT - he says the first quote out of his mouth is a Zappa one - "A mind is like a parachute - it doesnt work if it isnt open."

His teacher says this is a dumb line because you could have a hole in your parachute. My son instantly calls him out and asks why he has to add a stupid alteration to the thought to make it NOT work. LMAO. I was surprised his history teacher even used that quote at all - and on top of it - why was it a lame line? I think its brilliant.

That "teacher" needs to be hit in the face repeatedly with a rubber mallet and dragged thru the streets with his testicles tied to the rear bumper of a 1972 Chevy pickup truck.

Fuckin A.

The guitar solo in the Dun-Dun-Dun jam is fucking awesome.

We meet so many people who have no idea who FZ was

I was recently having dinner with some old friends, a Zappa fanatic among them. Over the course of the evening, the subject of music inevitably came up. The Zappa fanatic of course brought up FZ and began fanaticizing about him. I was chiming in, and the friend sitting between the two of us noted our mutual fanaticism. He looked at us and said, "You guys really seem to like Zappa...I really don't know much about him. How would you categorize him?" We proceed to try and explain that Frank defied categorization, and tried to touch on the many genres of music he composed and performed. At some point I looked at my friend and said, "Wait...how would you categorize him?" I saw the look on his face and immediately knew the answer. I said, "Doody jokes, right?" He immediately replied, "Yes", and went on to say that he had been totally clueless about what us two fanatics were telling him.

This is the ongoing frustrating problem I see all the time. I'm at a loss as to how it can be overcome. I don't even know what my point is here, just venting I guess. It was your comment above, Arkie.
Zappa music can be categorised as music encyclopedia 8)

Yep. But it seems the brilliant marketing analysts here know better.

I will fall for this - so I can get attacked - but I think the market could be expanded, if there was some creativity employed here by the marketers. UME likely thought so too, or else they wouldn't have paid for the catalogue.

The society is not yet ready for his music, maybe in 20 years it will.

Universal didn't pay for the catalogue, they paid for most of the catalogue.

Universal mostly only paid for the releases that Zappa produced in his lifetime with only a few exceptions, but you can't tell me that albums like Road tapes 2 would not sell sell shit loads if it was more readily available? People who loved the Guitar albums would love transfusion.. Maybe more specialist tittles like ETIHN would not sell but things like CP3 should be made available. These are all top notch albums. There are always younger listeners out there discovering Zappa all the time... Just targeting these albums to a narrow band of people is wrong, certain tittles have the potential to sell really well given the chance...

Where do you folks get your information? I was under the impression the ZFT bought back the catalog. Universal is a manufacture/distro channel whom they partnered with. In 10 years you can buy them again in new, improved versions in ZFT partnership with BLECH Records.

AND DISCO: I was agreeing with you. And if ya don't think people are amused by your standard all cap, bold, customized punctuation arrogance, then....

Blech was just a start-up. They're now owned by Ewwww Records.

Understanding irony is not one of Disco Boy's (I'm sure) manifold strengths...
