I think some praise is needed for this magnificent early Zappa tune. I love the early versions available on The Lost Episodes and Joe's Corsage but I think the version from Freak Out is my favourite.
I've just had it in far too loud in my headphones and it blew my fucking head off.
Where the fuck have my ears blown......

The song stands out to me from other earlt such Zappa tunes in that the lyrics seem to have some genuine heartfelt meaning as oppose to just pure sarcasm. And the version on Freak Out is delicously elaborate. Sticking it on full whack again (with my original Blue Verve vinyl) reminded me of the presence of the vibes and piano. God, Zappa made such a statement with his musical abilities on this debut.

Sticking on headphones and pumping them up full blast is definitely an underated practice.

One question - what is the percussion instrument that strikes on almost every 2nd beat throughout this song? I've been meaning to ask that for about 15 years......

Just listened and the only percussion I heard was JCB's drums, tambourine and vibes.

[EDIT] Maybe the piano?

One Djames is chasing another deenn, because they don't know what they're doin.

Try hocus pocus tinnitus and they blasted themselves away, no lol. A sound though once in their brain will haunt no real ghost, spirit say, in most bruwwers, yo.

i like the flo and eddie version played in late 71, as heard on the swiss cheese boot.

yeah, it's a guitar. my guess is it's frank.
you should listen to the basic tracks version on 'mofo' (the 4 cd box). it's amazing.

I've always had this song as one of my favorite fz-songs, too.

Damn that 4-CD set......

To Pbuzby, sorry that I didn't realise sooner - you are right, that is what I meant. Just didn't / doesn't sound like a guitar to me

In the verse the chord is(DG) First Then Seconed (GDG) my guess piano playing the root G
take in mind there is loads of diffrent sounding pianos n guitars.

In the original mix of the album heard on MOFO, the guitars are in the left channel, piano and percussion are in the right.
