My memory isn't great, and I mostly listen to frank when driving so I can't just grab the CD insert and read it when I need it. BUT I keep hearing snippets and think things like 'frank invented rap', or 'geoff barrow from portishead stole that', or 'adrian gurvitz is a c**t'.
Tomorrow, I'm getting together a list, but feel free to usurp me in the interim...

Zappa blended together different existing musical styles, putting his own stamp on it. Was he the first to do so? No. Did he add to it and take it to another or different level? Certainly. But he didn't invent any genres other than the Zappa genre. No single individual invented rap. New musical forms are usually a result of many people heading in a particular direction. Zappa, to me, is a culmination.

Coltrane, for one, did that in 1961 on Africa Brass

Sun Ra did that in the 50's.

The Who played live over backing tapes as far back as 1971 (synth/organ parts to Who's Next material).

Terry Riley was playing to loops in the 60s. The Who's Baba O Riley is named partially for him. Not that he invented it.

Perhaps Slime's list was satire?

Zappa is the best but let's not be ridiculous.

- Freak Out came out after Dylan's Blonde On Blonde, and even the Dylan's one was not neccessarily the first, see http://www.arf.ru/Notes/Freak/app3.html
- Frank himself denied he ever ate his own shit on stage, and claimed it was an urban legend (see The Real Frank Zappa Book)
- one of the first, The Who were recording "Quadrophenia" at the same time
- FZ did not used sampling until his Synclavier era (in pop music it was used much earlier), though his collection of samples was at the time one of the largest in the world

Exactly - I mean, there was this guy in Cleveland in the late Seventies who did some severe self mutilation as performance art, read about it in CLE magazine... Possibly he was the first to cut off his tongue on stage, but who cares?

You're probably referring to Chris Burden:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Burden

His most well-known act from that time is perhaps the 1971 performance piece Shoot, in which he was shot in his left arm by an assistant from a distance of about five meters with a .22 rifle. Also, Through the Night Softly was a performance where Burden held his hands behind his back and crawled through fifty feet of broken glass on Main Street in Los Angeles.

I can't remember if that's him - it's been over 30 years since I read that Cleveland fanzine.

Freak Out was released June 27, 1966 according to online sources.

The original announced release date of Blonde On Blonde was May 16, 1966 but it seems to have been pushed back to late June or July, since it did not chart until late July.

A bit about Dylan's album here: http://www.rdf.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Bob ... bPart1.htm

I believe the Grateful Dead used a 16-track to record Aoxomoxoa and Live/Dead before FZ used it on Hot Rats.

Frank may have formed the first rock band with two drummers. Billy Mundi joined on August 25, 1966, a year before the Grateful Dead added the 2nd drummer. Doubt anyone in rock music used two drummers before that.

So FZ official site say's June 27th
BD official site say's May 16th.
and you say that it could not of came out at that time because it took a month too chart in that case why not 2 months :|
