I have the following FZ EMI CDs:

Sheik Yerbouti
You Are What You Is
Tinsel Town Rebellion
Them or Us
The Perfect Stranger
FZ Meets the Mothers of Prevention/Jazz from Hell
Does Humor Belong in Music?

For those of you who listened these CDs in their EMI and their Ryko versions, what differences did you notice? I'm not talking about the covers ([Does Humor Belong in Music? has a horrendous cover) but about the music.

On Sheik Yerbouti, one tune is longer on the EMI. Don't ask me why.
The EMI Shiek Yerbouti is superior to the Ryko one. Same could have been said for You Are What You Is before it was remastered again in 1998.

I'm hearing the Japanese Ryko CD (1995) of You Are What You Is for the first time, it's new for me as I only the knew the EMI so far. The first difference: the track markers are much better than on the EMI (they're completely non sense on the EMI!).

... is 'track indexing' more appropriate?

I bought all the original EMI Zappa CD's when they were first released. It was all you could get here in the UK for a while so you took what you could!!!!

One of these EMI CD's I have is "Joe's Garage" and it has a curious error on Disc 1. When the Central Scrutinizer tells us that Joe was given a do-nut and told to stick closer to "church orientated social activities" it actually repeats the dialogue!!! So, it goes like this "church orientated social activities...social activities".

Also, the booklet for this is very dull - all the pictures & diagrams have been cut away quite badly and are in black & white!!!

I don't hear any reverb or compression (and I have excellent hearing. I can usually spot these kinds of things. I noticed that the sound of Zappa's You Are What You Is remix was horrible even before I heard the vinyl mix!).[/quote]

That's cool. However, if you were to hear the EMI CD or the LP, the difference would blow you away.
Also, another thing about the EMI Sheik Yerbouti CD is you get to hear Terry Bozzio giggle and say "Did you just record that?" at the end of I'm So Cute.

Now I have a question about the EMI CDs.

Since these CDs were made to be put in LP format, do the CDs need to be put through a Phono Preamp to get the original sound? Or were these not made with the Inverse RIAA Characteristics applied? I seem to remember reading somewhere that they were made against Zappa's will and he had already applied the RIAA curve to the recordings that were released on CD.

Thanks for any info ahead of time.
