What is your definition of "perfect"? No bad songs? I personally think this is unfair as their are some albums that have one or two clunkers that are better than those that have no clunkers. IMO, one excellent song can make an album more valuable than an entire album of "perfect tens".

My three faves for probably more than 20 years now.

The "perfect 10" statement probably derives from a combination of Nadia Comaneci's 1976 olympic gymnastics scores (nobody had ever scored a "10" before) and the Bo Derek movie "10" where she, the "10" in question, wanted to screw Dudley Moore(!) while Ravel's Bolero was playing in the background.

Orgasmic from start to finish. I would say none then. I feel that there is at least one dud on every single one of his records. The closest thing to a perfect ten is the Shut Up & Play box set & Hot Rats.

Man, Music, you're tough! I thought MY standards were high with only three! There are several FZ recordings which I feel contain no duds, but they just don't quite ECHO IN THE CANYONS OF MY MIND the way UM, HR, and OSFA do. Your mention of Shut Up n' Play and HR is hereby thankfully noted, lack of a "10" notwithstanding.

Just for curiosity's sake, which Hot Rats track(s) do you consider to be duds?

Batchain, I agree with the "warts and all" approach on many of the recordings. I usually let it play.
I don't rate albums on scales from 1 to 10 or whatever, but if I had to list my 10 favorite Zappa-Albums (which of course does change from time to time...), those would be:

Absolutely Free
Uncle Meat
Fillmore East
200 Motels
Overnite Sensation
Freak Out
Roxy
One Size Fits All
Läther
Hot Rats

(no ranking order)

I didn't include the YCDTOSA-series, 'cause I couldn't decide between Vol. 2 and the Roxy-Album... ::)
Zappa took so many artistic chances that it's hard to consider many of his albums "perfect" or "consistent", but here are the ones I would give a flawless score to:

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Lotta albums I'd give 9.75's, but those are the ones I feel work best from start to finish. Strangely, I like many of the "worse" albums more than some of the ones listed above, warts and all.
