For years I've read FZ articles which proclaim that 'Freak Out!' was the "first rock double-album" and the "first concept album".

While it may be the first rock double-album (?), I don't see FO as a concept album at all. In the words of Meredith Monk, "what's the concept of this?"

'Cruising With Ruben & The Jets' is a concept album. Bowie's 'Pin Ups' is a concept album. I'd like to hear some theories on how FO is supposed to be a concept album. Is 'Uncle Meat' a concept album? Shall we sit and spin until we rot on the cosmic utensil?

What is your conceptual continuity? Even Fido recognized a concept when he heard one! I think just about every one of Frank's albums is in some way a concept album. Some are more obvious than others.

I don't truly see FREAK OUT as a concept album, as far as there being a storyline to follow. But what makes a concept album to begin with? Take The Beatles' SGT PEPPER. Concept album or not? Most will say it is.

According to John Lennon, it was only a concept album because the Beatles said it was. Lennon has mentioned that his contributions to the album were written long before Paul came up with the idea of SGT PEPPER's band.

Josh, I get what your saying, but I agree more with Approximate, about FO.

I think more like, Joe's Garage or Thing Fish, when I think of concept albums (the most obvious),,, the same storyline through the whole record.

So then, is every Whitesnake album ever made a "concept album" about being horny?

The concept is the differences between certain lifestyles and being like, you know, individual.

Something like that, I am too tired to remember right now.

-/dr_grogg
