Sampler 3, August 2003

1 BEN KWELLER
“Falling”
FROM THE RELEASE Sha Sha
LABEL ATO/RCA
LINER NOTES This onetime wunderkind seems to have grown into his reputation with his second solo outing, Sha Sha, and in particular “Falling.” It’s perfect for fans of another Ben (Folds).
Following track 1: KGNU Boulder aircheck/Morning Sound Alternative (Sam Fuqua)

2 ANDY PRATT
“Change Your Mind”
FROM THE RELEASE New Resolutions
LABEL ItsAboutMusic.com
LINER NOTES Rolling Stone hailed his 1976 Resolution LP as having “forever changed the face of rock.” Now, Andy Pratt leads off New Resolutions with this intelligent, late-’60s-type rocker.
Following track 2: KGNU Boulder aircheck/promo for Comedy College

3 STEVEN DELOPOULOS
“Seasons”
FROM THE RELEASE Me Died Blue
LABEL eb+flo/Universal South
LINER NOTES New Jersey-raised Delopoulos has already won the press over with his debut CD, and radio is following suit. “Seasons” is a good example why.
Following track 3: KGNU Boulder aircheck/Afternoon Sound Alternative (E.C. Erb)

4 RACHAEL SAGE
“Bravedancing”
FROM THE RELEASE Public Record
LABEL Mpress
LINER NOTES “Bravedancing” shows why some compare her favorably with Tori Amos. Listen and understand why Sage has won the John Lennon, Billboard and Great American Songwriting Contests.
Following track 4: KGNU Boulder aircheck/promo for Overdub

5 STROLLER
“Six Inches”
FROM THE RELEASE Six Inches
LABEL Compadre
LINER NOTES This Nashville-based four-piece is made up of guys who have played with Matthew Ryan, Will Hoge and Bare Jr. “Six Inches” is a guitar-drenched rocker with melody.

6 TOM LANGFORD
“Cadmium Angels”
FROM THE RELEASE Mercy To Be Found
LABEL Bella Vista
LINER NOTES LA-area songwriter/multi- instrumentalist Tom Langford made his freshman CD with veteran producer Bill Bottrell’s guidance. “Cadmium Angels” will speak to the Alexi Murdoch and Eastmountainsouth faithful.

7 NORTH MISSISSIPPI ALLSTARS
“Eyes”
FROM THE RELEASE Polaris
LABEL Tone-Cool/ATO
LINER NOTES On this lead cut from their third CD, North Mississippi Allstars exhibit the fantastic musicianship that has always been the calling card of the Dickinson brothers and bassist Chris Chew.

8 JOAN OSBORNE
with THE HOLMES BROTHERS
“Nobody’s Fault But Mine”
FROM THE RELEASE Shout, Sister, Shout! A Tribute to Sister Rosetta Tharpe
LABEL M.C. LINER NOTES Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a Gospel superstar in the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s. Joan Osborne and The Holmes Brothers join Bonnie Raitt, Marcia Ball and many others on this tribute CD.

DISC TWO
1 KENNY LOGGINS
“Alive ’N Kickin’”
FROM THE RELEASE It’s About Time
LABEL All The Best!
LINER NOTES Co-written with Clint Black, “Alive ’N Kickin’” is autobiographical and recalls Loggins & Messina days, while It’s About Time is Loggins’ first new album in six years.
Following track 4: KGNU Boulder aircheck/promo for Corriente

2 TROY JOHNSON
“Fingertips”
FROM THE RELEASE Twelve
LABEL Name
LINER NOTES What if John Mayer added a mournful banjo and Chicago-style horns to his pop hits? Texas-born Troy Johnson has sung on everyone else’s records, now it’s his turn.
Following track 2: KGNU Boulder aircheck/Musica Mundi (George Figgs)

3 BILL MALLONEE
“Life On Other Planets”
FROM THE RELEASE Perfume Letter
LABEL Paste
LINER NOTES Mallonee’s second post-Vigilantes Of Love effort is out now, and this lead focus cut is simply one more example of his penchant for writing perfect rock for grown-ups.
Following track 4: KGNU Boulder aircheck/promo for Gospel Chime Hour

4 TOWNES VAN ZANDT
“Black Jack Mama”
FROM THE RELEASE In the Beginning…
LABEL Compadre
LINER NOTES Townes Van Zandt was already a premiere songwriter by the time In the Beginning… was recorded as demos in 1966. “Black Jack Mama” is TVZ all acoustic.
Following track 4: KGNU Boulder aircheck/Sleepless Nights (Jerod Ebenreck)

5 SARA LOVELL
“Separation”
FROM THE RELEASE Coming To
LABEL Zero Gravity
LINER NOTES Sara Lovell’s Coming To CD is already getting spun on Non-Comm stations nationwide, thanks to songs like “Separation.” Lovell candidly and intelligently tackles a very tough topic here.

6 BEULAH
“Your Mother Loves You Son”
FROM THE RELEASE Yoko
LABEL Velocette
LINER NOTES Yoko is the fourth CD from this San Francisco-based, guitar-driven alt-rock outfit. “Your Mother Loves You Son” is driving, insistent and infectious.

7 THE GAMBLE BROTHERS BAND
“Record Store”
FROM THE RELEASE Back To The Bottom
LABEL Archer
LINER NOTES Memphis has spawned some great music, including The Gamble Brothers Band. Check out the funky/jazzy, Nawlins’ rhythm of “Record Store,” from their second album.

8 SUZY BOGGUSS with RAY BENSON
“Cupid Shot Us Both With One Arrow”
FROM THE RELEASE Swing
LABEL Compadre
LINER NOTES The CD title tells you what you get from Bogguss and Benson. Reared on Sinatra and Fitzgerald, Nashville’s leading lady must have had a lot fun making this one.

ImageNo booklet

And lastly my big $2.98US purchase Image
$11.83US

BTW, any Nashville FZ fans, there was a new sealed Joe's Corsage for $9.95 there today on the new upper rack. I put it in the back of the FZ CDs.

Enough to give away (after I verify they play OK) when I pick them up for a nickel or a quarter. I sent one each to my ex-nephew in Chicago via my daughter when she went up to visit and he was appreciative. The CTD CD is one of my all time favorite discs.

So after giving blood and getting petrol on the way home, I stopped into McKay's.

My ex-wife "did go mental" and made an expensive exit, but the best thing for me. As for how many I've got, lots; I stopped counting. I have a lot of built in shelves and storage units along the wall in my wreck room, as well as crates and boxes to listen to and sort. If I ever divest of my vinyl, which I haven't listen to in years, I'll have plenty of room. I'll borrow a digital camera and post the walls of discs one of these days.
