Back in the 80s, an American tattoo company used the Chinese character tattoo fad to exploit gullible Americans, by creating an "alphabet" using actual Chinese characters.
Result?

Thanks to google maps I discovered that Amsterdam is just 200 km away from Essen. So I have to think about going to The Jayhawks concert on friday heavily.

In the category "it really exists": the flying machines by Caproni that you can find in The Wind Rises.

In Dutch, the egg dish "sunny side up" is called spiegelei, "mirror egg"
In Japanese, it's called medamayaki, which translates to "fried eyeball".

I feel sick.

Chickens are difficult to chase out of your garden if they've laid an egg there.

Epilepsy can be easily evoked by letting opposite colours flash.
I got an epilepsy attack just from looking at a funfair ride, called Der Burner.

When we drive to Lake Tahoe from my town we take a backround highway that is tree lined, I have heard of people having epilepsy attacks from the morning sunlight flashing throw the tree's when driving that route...it's rough on me and I don't have epilepsy...

I have that too sometimes, particularly in trains.

Here's the ride that did it for me: DO NOT WATCH IF YOU'RE EPILEPTIC.

A girl I dated years ago wouldn't go to any concerts because so many bands used strobe lights in their shows. She said just a few seconds around them would cause an attack.

Never realised the country roads in the north / mid states of USA were so gridlike.

Painter Egon Schiele had a very high libido and was attracted to his younger sister; once, his father broke down a door to see what they were doing. Of course, at the time they were only developing film. What film that was the lore doesn't say.

Schiele and his wife Edith died at a very young age of the Spanish Flu in 1918.

Also learnt that there's no satire silly enough to make everybody think "hey, that's satire."

Di sotto in sù is the name for the optical illusion ceiling painting where the artist uses an architectorial vanishing point and characters in perspective to make a ceiling look like it's high up.

Mansfield Smith-Cumming was director of the British secret service.

According to Wikipedia he once suggested to use semen as invisible ink, giving him a place on the Aptonym list.

Speaking of ink, Cumming known as C (like M in the Bond books) began the use of a particular shade of purple ink on all his official communications, which the subsequent heads of the British Secret Service still use to this day. The guy was a little crazy, he had an artificial leg which during interviews he would suddenly stab with a knife to freak out the interviewee. During WW2 he was undercover in Germany, but didn't speak a word of German!

He probably followed the advice I was given prior to my german 'o level' exam.
"If in doubt use the english word, and put 'en' on the end."
I got an 'unclassified' BTW...
