Blind Faith's Well Alright over Buddy Holly's even though it sounds like Vietnamese rock.

Frigid Pinks House of the rising Sun over Animal's.

Blue Cheer's Summertime Blues over anybody's.

Elton John does a version of Honky Tonk Woman live on, I think the album is,
11-17-70 that I like.

Lena Horne's Summertime over Janis Joplin's.

I think some of these are a reverse answer...

Here's something that's been a mystery to me since 1976: A note-for-note rip-off of FZ's "Big Swifty", retitled "Sudan" and the "title cut" of an album by "???" (An Arabic name used by some black jazz musician when that was popular to do.) When the DJ announced the name I was speechless rightly assuming Zappa had very strangely and inexplicably put out a different version of "Big Swifty" three years after the original "Big Swifty". I knew it note-for-note and only wished I'd written down the name of who had done it because it was unknown to me and certainly not an easy name to remember.
It was by pure chance that I was flipping through the "college radio stations" and very reasonably took this to be another version FZ did of "Big Swifty". I liked this version of "Big Swifty" which, I suddenly found out wasn't (?) "Big Swifty"!
By the time "818-PUMPKIN" was up and running I called and got some asshole who was forcing himself to be nice to me and letting me tell my story with not a speck of interest in it. Whoever he was he should not have been answering phones. He was a total dildo-head who just blew me off as fast as possible.
This has annoyed my for an obviously very long time and this goon at "818-PUMPKIN" was as useful as tits on a bull.
As crazy as it must sound I still want to know who the fuck did that "not-Big Swifty" number! Not that I ever will know but where were Gail Z and her bloodhounds then? No one seemed to give a fuck!

"Day Tripper" by Cheap Trick, off the "Found All The Parts" EP. Sounds close to the Beatles, but played with more energy.

not Whitesnake's version then?!

Wow...what a snore-fest. At least it wasn't reggae!
Now I like the Cheap Trick one even more!

The Clash do a really hard hitting version, too!

Eric Burdon and the Animals : "Coloured Rain" vs the original by Traffic.

And Eric Burdon/War's version of "Paint it Black" comes AWFULLY close to beating the original.

"Directly From My Heart To You" - Cover by Frank Zappa as sung by Mr. Sugar Cane Harris.

In all honesty, even though Frank didn't write, this is one of my favorite music moments ever. Very very very very very very very very very very very very very perfect in every sorta way.

Steve Hackett's cover of Genesis's Watcher of the Skies on his album Genesis Revisited. Dance On A Volcano and Los Endos come close.

John Coltrane - My Favorite Things

John Cale - Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah

Another vote for the Hendrix version of Watchtower

Special Mention: Michael Hedges's cover of Sofa. While it does not surpass Frank's versions, its damn excellent.

I think I heard that once, but I don't remember it too well. The Foos are great though! They did a bang-up job on "Baker Street" too.

Easy Star All Stars version of OK Computer called RADIODREAD. Much better than the original album.
They also did DUB SIDE OF THE MOON, which works as well.
