The Zoot's Eleanor Rigby, early 70's Australian.
Gets an excellent prog/psych treatment that is so good.
Johnny Cash did a version of Aussie Nick Cave's The Mercy Seat. Creepy & Fantastic!!
Check it out. It's on Johnny's 2nd last album(I think).
How about Bowie's Pinups for the best cover version album?

Harry Nilsson's version of "Without You" blows the socks off the original Badfinger version.

Well, "You Really Got Me" isn't 20 min. on the album, but it IS live. And you're right. It smokes (which is why I mentioned it  )

Pat Travers recorded an excellent version of "Is This Love" by Bob Marley.

OH man manymany.....
first off, I have to say, All Along the Watchtower is SOOOO fitting to open this list, as I have always believed, this is the best cover song EVER!!!! Last week I watched a documentary on Jimi Hendrix which contained his performance of Like a Rolling Stone at Monterey, and I have to say it was absolutely sublime. If you haven't heard it seek it out, DESTROY'S Bob's version. Which leaves me to think, Imagine Hendrix having done an entire album of Dylan covers? Imagine Masters of War by hendrix into Machine gun????? okay I'll stop right here, talking about Hendrix makes me want to sob as we were fucking robbed. My firm belief is, he hadn't even STARTED yet.......
Okay, Frank's Stairway and Whipping post WAY better than the originals.
and one not mentioned yet, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by the Rheostatics. They released two TOTALLLY different takes on this song, and both are total masterpieces.

At least as good, IMHO drummer's at least as good, vocals at least as good...but guitar is better:

Check it out, it's a Miami band called Nonpoint :)

Maybe not better, but pretty darn good, (I'm partial to the original) :)

Steve Hackett's cover of Genesis's Watcher of the Skies on his album Genesis Revisited. Dance On A Volcano and Los Endos come close.

John Coltrane - My Favorite Things

John Cale - Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah

Another vote for the Hendrix version of Watchtower

Special Mention: Michael Hedges's cover of Sofa. While it does not surpass Frank's versions, its damn excellent.
 You and that Michael Hedges  . Marry him why don't you.
Oh that's right, you got a thing for Celine Dion.

Whoever did a cover (about 10 years ago) of Blind Faith's,
Can't Find My Way Home..it ...wasn't too bad.

BUT THE WORST COVER SONG OF ALL TIME WAS MASSACRED BY THAT GOOF OZZY UNBOURNE WHEN HE MUTILATED MOUNTAINS, MISSISSIPPI QUEEN.

I know, you requested better than the original-you could always have me fired. I'll say no more. No more I'll say.

I prefer Devo's version of "Satisfaction" to the Stones' version. 8) Devo did sweet covers.

Ben Folds cover of "Get Your Hands Off My Woman". Apart from the fact that I havent heard a bad Ben Folds song yet, The Darkness who did the original didn't do their own song any justice, they ought to be ashamed of themselves.. Ben Folds transformed it.

Totally agree. Miles makes these tunes really beautiful. Youre Under Arrest is a good album man!

Other covers?

Living Colours versions of Burning The Midnight Lamp, Love And Happiness, Sailin On and Back In Black all are equal, if not better, than the originals IMO.....
