I believe that Manfred Mann's versions of "Spirits in the Night" and "Blinded by the Light" are far superior than the Bruce Springsteen versions...I think Springsteen's are the original ones.

Jesus Cal, are you having one of those flurries or whatever they are? At least 25 posts. At first I thought the forum had been real busy since my last visit when I opened the most recent posts link and then I saw your name was everywhere. What triggers it off?

Harry Nilsson's version of "Without You" blows the socks off the original Badfinger version.

The Blood, Sweat & Tears version of Without Her (different song) blows the socks off the original Harry Nilsson version.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience cover version of Bob Dylan's All Along The Watchtower.

Elvis Costello wrote "Girls Talk" but Dave Edmunds perfected it.''

The Byrds could have made a career out of doing nothing except Dylan's songs. Their version of "My Back Pages" is amazing.

Deep Purple's version of Neil Diamond's "Kentucky Woman" smokes the original.

Oh come on.

Bolero performed by Zappa is an amusing distraction.
Performed by an orchestra, accompanied by a mental image of boning Bo Derek, is a beautiful thing.

But orchestras usually don't play a reggae or mariachi arrangement of the composition, which btw was meant to be an orchestration (i.e. arrangement) exercise...

How many ways can I arrange this repetitive melody and still keep it interesting? Zappa succeeded. I wish he also could have done it with a complete orchestra, but then he would never do it, given the amount of his own compositions in need of play... Besides, I never heard the original Ravel's Bolero.

Sweet Jane by The Cowboy Junkies is better than the Velvet Underground original version.

I remember when that came out and Lou Reed said something like that being the his favorite cover of that song. Maybe having something to do with other versions skipping the Heavenly Wine and Roses section.
