I've just been looking at a thread which offered the following friendly replies to someone looking for a place to download a few Zappa mp3s in order to preview an album:

"Don't download official material you asshole!!"

"FUCK ZAPPA MP3's, GET THE REAL THING! "

"You're a dick if you download official releases."

Many members of this forum seem to think that downloading (esp Zappa) music is the equivalent of murder. For myself, I'd just like to say that if I hadn't accidentally downloaded "My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama" from Limewire one day, I might never have discovered Frank's music, and now 5 years later, I'm a devoted fan and have bought all the official releases bar the very latest ones. In fact, illegal downloading has led directly to me spending many hundreds of pounds on music.

I understand that not everyone will go out and buy the music if they like it after having downloaded it, all I'm saying is that it can be a great way to discover new stuff.

I'm currently backpacking around the world, and a few weeks ago my mp3 player broke, so I'm downloading the entire Zappa discography via a torrent. My CDs are thousands of miles away...it's not like I have much choice! I just don't like the fact that some members of this forum would probably call this a henious crime. Hey...if you think I'm gonna live without my Zappa collection, well, blow it out your ass!

Torrent tracker Demonoid.com shut down by Canadian Recording Industry Association

From Wikinews, the free news source you can write!

September 26, 2007

Demonoid, a popular semi-private torrent tracker, is reported to have been shut down by the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA). This is the latest in many shutdowns of peer-to-peer websites by anti-piracy groups. Earlier this week, trackers Torrentbox and Podtropolis were disabled for visitors in the United States due to a law suit by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).

Demonoid is one of the largest torrent trackers on the internet, second only to The Pirate Bay, and tracks over a million torrent files. The site has recently moved its servers from the Netherlands to Canada in June after a Dutch piracy group BREIN subpoenaed Demonoid's ISP, demanding that the site be taken offline.

The site founder and administrator Deimos has not commented yet regarding the shutdown. Both the tracker and the website are inaccessible as of September 26 at 0700 UTC.

Crap. I loved that site.

I download music in order to sample it. That way, I only buy what I like.

You can obtain far, far more music via file-sharing. It seems idiotic to restraint that option due to some fag values.

I laugh at your scanty, legally-bought music collection.

My opinion on this? Everything in moderation.

I don't mind if you're downloading to preview music. And I agree with the guy who has already bought the cds and is downloading them. But fuck all you people who expect to enjoy the music and not shell out a buck for it. CDs are way overpriced, but to simply steal everything is not the answer. If you're going to download the zappa discography, AT LEAST go see ZPZ and buy a t-shirt, will ya?

I've never downloaded anything illegally, so maybe I don't know what I'm missing, but I do know two things: a) I like having a physical "album" to hold, read, and file on my shelf, rather than just a sound file on my computer; b) I've already got a shitload of music in my collection and don't have a pressing need to expand my collection that quickly. When would I listen to all that stuff anyway?

I don't endorse illegal downloads.

That being said, I also agree that:

"If it ain't missing, it ain't stealing!"

I have no problem with downloading. I do it all the time.

I order CDs online as well, though. Nothing beats coming home after a hard day's work to a couple of CD's in the post.

It doesn't matter. There are hundreds still out there. They will never get rid of all of them. They need a new plan.

Pirates are fantastic. Doesn't get much better than pirates. Beards, rum, ships, big sails, parrots, big guns...

If all file sharing is eliminated, the record companies would earn an extra 276 billion a year. The only downfall: No more rap!

I download stuff. Mostly popular songs i like (or have liked in the past) because I wouldn't buy an album of whatever band it is. Most of the stuff I want is never shared by torrent users so i'll have to buy my weird music as cd's through websites and stuff. I totally agree with King - its nice to have that one thats been on your "to be bought" list of albums waiting in a pristine new cd case inside your letterbox. People will find a way to download and share shit illegally somehow or another.

Now that we got YouTube I see no reason at all for file sharing.
