Chris Squire, who began his musical career as a choirboy, blames the Eagles for the members of Yes escalating from pot and hash use to cocaine, according to Something Else Reviews. Said Squire, “We were strictly a pot and hash band at the beginning.”

It wasn’t until the band toured with the Eagles in 1973 as their opening act that Squire tried cocaine. A member of the band took him aside and said, “Try this.” Squire dipped into the bag of white powder. “Cocaine,” he said, smiling.

As for acid, Squire gave it up after a scare. In the mid ’60s, the members of his then-band, The Syn, made weekly trips to a club after dropping acid. That ended for Squire after he sampled some of a friend’s homemade LSD and ended up in the hospital, where he thought he was near death. Squire said the only time after that was an accident. He attended a party hosted by the late Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy. “Phil was a naughty boy,” Squire said. “He said, ‘Do you want a line of coke?’ And there was smack in it.”
