Well Dovey, that song (M'Bube) was written by a Zulu named Solomon Linda. It was stolen by a US songwriter who added 10 words to it, adopted it as his own and made millions with it. Linda died in poverty, along with his wife, three sons and youngest daughter. It took his loved ones twenty years to save money for a tombstone.

The matter's been settled now, the three remaining daughters of Linda receive a lot of money for this hit, but it comes much too late for Solomon. For this reason I've sworn never to sing the ten words again.

That Bloodhound Gang is a good one. I could listen to Mope quite a bit.

hey bonny, thanks for the info about "the lion...". a very sad story, indeed. i had heard pete seeger on television mention before he sang the tune, but called it "uh-wee-ma-way" (spelled phonetically, sorry) and at the time i was under the impression it was an african folk song before being made into a top forty hit. you just never know the back story to a song. kind of like "louie, louie" originally being a sailing tune before becoming a frat fave...and an fz fave, too.
