Actually The Kingsmen had a few songs like 'Little Latin Lupe Lu' and 'Jolly Green Giant'. They had been around since 1957. 8)

Yes Cal, I have been around since then, LOL. I had to look up The Kingsman to find out some information seeing I had vague memories of other songs they did. 8)

In the US maybe, but in Oz they had a string of 8 top ten hits over 1966-68, and were the biggest band of the time. The difficulty of foreign bands breaking into the international market basically stuffed them, but then the rest of the world missed out on some great music at the time.

Jilted John by Jilted John # 4 UK charts 1978......

Rabid Records, a new wave label based in Manchester, England, received a recording of "Jilted John", composed and performed by an actor named Graham Fellowes. Rabid released this semi-monologue concerning the woes of a young lover, and were soon so overwhelmed by demand that EMI had to take over its marketing in 1978.

Fellowes slipped into his Jilted John character in media interviews - a few similary gormless appearances on BBC Television's "Top Of The Pops" pushed the record to number 4 in the UK chart - and necessitated the issue of an album and an "answer" single by John's rival, Gordon The Moron.

After this episode, however, Fellowes reverted to his acting career, including roles in the UK soap opera "Coronation Street" and a northern stage production of a play about John Lennon. Fellowes made a return to music in his new 90s guise - that of John Shuttleworth, a middle-aged showbiz hopeful. Enjoying considerable cult popularity, ha has embarked on a series of musical/comedy tours throughout the UK, and makes numerous radio and television appearances, with a set of songs that includes the moving "Pigeons In Flight"...

Jilted John - Jilted John

I've been going out with a girl
Her name is Julie
But last night she said to me
when we were watching telly
(this is what she said)
She said listen John I love you
But there's this bloke I fancy
I dont want to two time you
So its the end for you and me
Who's this bloke I asked her
Goooooordon, she replied
Not THAT poof, I said dismayed
yes but he's no poof she cried - he's more a man than you'll ever be

Here we go, two three four

I was so upset that I cried all the way to the chip shop
When I came out there was Gordon standing at the bus stop
And guess who was with him
Yeah, Julie, and they were both laughing at me
oh, she is cruel and heartless
to pack me for Gordon
Just cos he's better looking than me
just cos he's cool and trendy

but I know he's a moron, Gordon is a moron
Gordon is a moron, Gordon is a moron

Here we go, two three four

she's a slut, and he's a creep
she's a tart, he's very cheap...

I heard 'The Letter' by the Box Tops on the radio yesterday. Were they a one-hit wonder? I like that tune, Alex Chilton sings lead on that, right?

Now, I don't know if he had another hit or not - it's possible he could have - but I think Terence Trent D'Arby's "Sign Your Name" is a great song.

i agree, cal--"sign your name" is a very sexy, lovely song. but terrence also had a hit with a catchy lil ditty called "wishing well" off his debut lp. i think there might have been one other tune off that record. i eagerly awaited his next lp, but it was'nt that great, as i remember, and he had a monstrous ego, almost forgivable because he was talented...but not that talented.
