I have a Sony receiver. Three Sharp speakers and two big old Magnavox 3-way speakers that I got at a Salvation Army thrift store for 8 bucks. It sounds great to me.

I just got a pair of totally refurbished AR 2ax speakers for 200 dollars! hell of a deal! These suckers are pretty big but the sound is so balanced. :smoke:

I am frankly quite surprised that my mid powered Sherwood can handle them at 45 watts per channel. Sounds so good together!

Wooooo Hoooo!

Just scored a 1966 Sherwood S-8800 receiver for 56 bucks!

I have been searching for one of these for about 3 years. every time I either didn't have enough money or got outbid at the last 3 seconds. This one has a nice wood cabinet too. don't know if it's got the lattice grill that goes over the opening but I can have one made I suppose. I have the smaller version of this already but it's not powerful enough to drive my AR4's so I'll be giving it to my brother one of these days.

Just hooked up the receiver and put the benjamin mirachord turntable on top of it. Ohhh beautiful walnut cabinets on both and now I have that mosfet 60's solid state sound that has a tube warmth to it but no warm up time. I wish I had a server so I could post pics.

That's because mosfets are voltage amplifiers much like tubes. Bipolars are good for handling lots of current which will work nicely with difficult speaker loads.

BTW I just got a lead on a Nakamichi Z-1000 in gold Cassette deck.

High end stereo was the second most tragic misconception of the last century next to communism - it works in theory only.
You pay thousands and thousands of dollars for more quiet and noiseless gear only to find that the absence of hiss and rumble reveals the sound of the beard winding machine starting up in the basement - how much better off we are with our modern plastic desktop stereo. :smurf:

It's called "Surround Sound". Do they have that in Australia?
