LA is, they have TV & Movies wrapped up and more people try to emulate the So Cal life style, what do they say...as goes California so goes the country.

No way...Vancouver, British Columbia is! Just look at how many of your t.v. series, and movies, are shot there!

I agree with JPD California isn't the promised land, most of us learned that in the 60's, you can keep lost anglese, stockton, Diego, napa valley, and all the rest I don't know how miller does it in Santa Barbra, great place to visit. Vancouver has the culture.

Yea I blathered a bit but say NYC is more of a culture center than cally, much more diverse dinning, as well as art, imho.

My perception from my rural Northern California digs is that NY and SF are the cultural hotspots. LA is viewed as the capital of superficiality by many Americans. My perception is that there is probably more culture overall in Europe as a whole than in the US. I could be totally wrong about all of this though as I don't get around too much. Larry The Cable Guy plays arenas where I live so I've got no right to judge.

these people are from north carolina
some more great hillbilly music
hey, this is a surprise
in their own words
I still know people who think that New York is the place to 'make it'
Cali not so much: if it was the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for the last half of the century, the Great Western Dream and all, lots of people's current observation is that maybe by now it's gone a little too far Over the Rainbow and no one's sure if they'll make it all back in one piece.? But Texas still wants to secede so, maybe we can let them fight the Mexican War again if that's what they want. They might have to resurrect John Wayne to do that and the funds for that I hear are all tied up with some ridiculous lawsuit so they may have to wait on secession.
SF, Silicon Valley up thru Portland and yes, Vancouver does seem really vibrant to a lot of people that I know and keep up with. Lots going on, pushing for new ideas. Avoid the vampires and crazed real estate zealots and get used to the rain as they say.
But New York, New York is a wonderful town!

I do not see the big cultural plus in Europa, with the exception of the old buildings and history, we have the cliff carvings in the south west, . are we talking scientific minds ,artists, musicians, chef's? Lady Gaga has certainly captivated the USA.

Culture can be anything, I would say James Dean and is angst teenage look was a so cal cultural icon, most of the clothing trends and hairstyles, home decore, gagets, and cool stuff come to the fore in SoCal and Norcal also first. These are the current cultural things, there are historical sites and museums everywhere, this is not what I would call the leading edge of current culture.

IMHO; the USA leads in culture, one only has to listen to Frank Zappa, or look at a Jon Crain watercolour painting, or eat at Primanti bro's in Pittsburg to believe it.

As a well travelled Brit I would give the nod to NYC, and would argue that as far as post 1920 goes it probably has the edge globally. LA has films and some popular music but other aspects of cultural life may be better represented elsewhere.

Not a doubt, one of the cultural Meccas of the world. If you have to look for an artist's phone number, ask the operator to look up in Soho (is that it?)...
