Just thought, since I haven't been around these parts in ages, I should post about going to see Weird Al Live this summer at Massey Hall. Al was the first musician I ever scrimped money together to buy, his 80's output was a massive part of my childhood, and further interest in music. There was a massive lapse in my interest in his music from the early 90's through till I guess I heard Genius in France. At any rate, I happened to be in TO while he was playing this summer, and figured I should check out his live show, which I have to say was mindblowing. I don't know if anyone else here has been to his concerts, but honestly, the man is such a consummate professional. At 50, still giving each and every song his all, and let's be clear, this concert was non-stop for more than 2 and a half hours. Even without the parodies and costume changes and all that, he's got a monstrous stage presence that sells every line of every song. The man was born to be on stage.
Another more impressive feat is that honestly, he's releasing better albums now than he ever has in his career, especially Straight Out of Lynwood I feel trumps just about anything I heard as a kid, and given this has such massive nostalgic appeal for me, that's a major feat! Anyways, just wanted to spread awareness of the man on here, you cannot be more entertained in concert, of that I am fairly sure. he builds the shows up into an epic frenzy of joy by the end. And I don't really want to give away some of his gimmicks, because not knowing some of what happens made the experience SO much better. He's on tour now, a strong recommendation!

I really like Al, and would have no problem going to a concert of his. I think that you're right, Straight Out Of Lynnwood was good.

Cal, as a kid in love with Weird Al, I could have NEVER EVER imagined the live show was that freaking good. Like not in my wildest imaginations! High recommendation.

Yep. I saw him about ten years ago, it's still one of the most entertaining shows I've ever seen.

Glad to hear it! My friends girlfriend who was at the show with us had seen him when she was a little girl. I was trying to convince her it would be impossible for that show to be any better than the one we saw but she was adamant! Silly childhood delusions!

I saw him here live three years ago. And while I'm not a big fan, I totally agree...he puts on a fantastic show!

My former teacher actually knows one of the guys on his tour crew...

I've successfully subjugated both of my sons to Weird Al over the last 10 years or so. I'm taking my youngest son to see him in Reno in November and between the two sons I think this will be show number 5 for me. Al's only a couple years older than me and when he started I thought he was kind of corny, not someone to admit to liking if you were trying to be cool. Well , I guess he still is kinda "white and nerdy" but I totally respect him now and think he is some kind of genius in doing what he does. I agree his albums are better than ever even though I have less knowledge of the songs he is parodying. I find his "style parodies" great too like his FZ tribute "Genius in France", or his Dylan "Bob" or the Doors take "Craigslist". He also has some pretty good original songs not owing to anyone elses celebrity. The shows are great with a real tight, professional band and Al's costume changes and manipulation of the media in his celebrity interviews are hilarious. Highly recommended, kids or not.

You are right, he was very corny in the early days, but what he's releasing now, as far as I'm concerned goes well beyond that. He no longer writes songs about how silly food is, and now makes relevant comments about the pop and social climate of our day. While not at the Broadway the Hardway level or anything like that, check out the video for "Party in the C.I.A." He's approaching that. Or on a more tame level, a song like "Stop Forwarding that Crap to Me". While not a massive life or death issue, he is making a statement on something I'm sure annoys us all. He's become relevant i feel. Or check out "Whatever You Like" a parody of a song by the same name. Turns the reality of dirt poor people listening to songs about ridiculous bling on it's head and makes it realistic in a hilarious way. "I'll take you out to Burger King or Micky Dees and baby you can have whatever you like..."
I'm surprised it took some sort of effort to convert your kids! The second my son saw me act out Fat, he was hooked for life!
