I actually listened to a cover of Piece Of My Heart by Faith Hill. Good grief did it suck. Why don't we just take all of the emotion out of the song and sing it like you don't care either way. Take a piece, or not. Whatever. It might be a little bit unfair to compare her to Janis, but crap, try to put a shred of feeling into it.

Also, I've always hated Lenny Kravitz's cover of American Woman. Lock into a really uninteresting groove and then do not change it.

I agree about the Lnny cover, I have not seen Faith sing the song, but I do not have high hopes... :smoke:

I don't think Zappa's cover of John Cage's 4'33" captures quite the same feel of the original either.

Feel free to judge for yourself:

That was good, the trouble with covers is unless you completely change it up...say do it reggae, country, blues…etc…it is basically a copy or even worse Karaoke, but I think your band is good... :smoke:

I found an old rehearsal tape from a band I played with in high school (mid '80s), and found the definitive all-time worst version of Def Leppard's "Bringin' on the Heartbreak". I was the singer, and I was horrible.

Agree with Cal re: American Woman. Lenny K had no business doing that.

Someone played me Tori Amos' version of Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" recently.. I'm still on the fence about that one - it's a bold move, but it's awfully ugly sounding. Blasphemy, some might say. Not that I'm against blasphemy.

any cover done by Ozzy Osbourn is atrocious. I heard World Turning (Fleetwood Mac) by a bluegrass band and it doth sucketh. I think it was Alyson Krauss (???sp).

Me posting here...it's like I've relapsed....help...

You cannot have this conversation (coversation?) and not mention Madonna's cover of American Pie. All Saints covering Under The Bridge. Atomic Kitten's Blondie covers.

Adding insult to injury department: William Shatner covering McAurthur's Park.

Or for that matter, anything covered by Wm. Shatner.....

Is THAT what you were listening to instead of being at Martyr's on Thursday night?
As for MacArthur Park, there are ALOT of bad versions of that cake that got left out in the rain.
Try this one if you are in need of a horrible ear-douching:

Of course, there's Donna Summer's version....at least she can sing---but does that make it right, I ask you?
Cal, I agree with the Faith Hill cover, pretty bad...I might have even heard a country version of Ticket To Ride that made me wince.

One of the very first concerts I went to was Franki Valli and the Four Seasons......I have a soft spot for them. They had a lot of great songs....their cover of Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" was not among them.

Here's The Beatles covering their cover of "You Really Got A Hold On Me" - really badly. I blame Yoko.

I disagree......I just saw it and I still don't believe.....the things that pass for talent/entertainment I can't understand.

All those classic rock songs that Santana covered on his cover album. Every one of them stinks. Good god that's inexcusable!

Bowie's version of Across the Universe on Young Americans is crazy and many people hate it. I quite like it though. - What I can't stand is when Norwegian pop singers do slow, sort of "sensitive" covers of everything from Cohen/Buckley's Hallelujah, through Kiss to church hymns. Horrible!

I don't consider Suzanna Wallumrød a pop singer btw, more jazz - and she's actually able to cover everything from Cohen/Buckley's Hallelujah, through Kiss and Joy Division to church hymns in slow, sensitive and beautiful versions. But she's the only one!

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds by Elton John. Hell, most covers are never as good. A couple of exceptions: Cortez the Killer by Built to Spill and Baker Street by Foo Fighters.
