Hey, I've done a lot of research on franks performance Strat, the blonde one with the black pick-guard. I plan on recreating this amazing instrument this coming summer but I want to make sure i recreate everything perfectly. I had a few questions about this guitar and was wondering if anyone on this forum knew the answers. One, is the floyd rose floating? second what are the extra switches? and third what dimarzio strat pickup's did frank use? I know the middle and bridge are seymour duncan hot stacks. but the neck pickup is a dimarzio but i don't know which exactly. Thanks.

thanks a link for a pick of the guitar

The man to talk to would be Eddie Clothier.
Good Luck

Frank Zappa:
It's a customized Stratocaster. The only thing on this guitar that is Fender is the body. Everything else on it is custom. It has a custom neck, it has customized electronics, custom pickups, Floyd Rose tremolo.

Just watched Does humor belong in music vid live 1984,And the Strat as the three same pick ups all the same,as the photo above Middle and Bridge.
All Floyd Rose are floater's,i have seen some with the body cut away for more pull back making the strings tighter, not Zappa though!

Now you have some more research.

I am not sure if Eddie is still working for Performance Guitars,
he may very well be so you can try calling them in L.A.
I believe DZs Twin Towers RIG used in ZPZ 2008 YCFOSA was designed and built by Eddie.

Keep on digging.

I'm still curious as to the neck pickup in Frank's performance strat
If it's a Dimarzio, and Frank wanted noiseless to match the Hot Stacks, he might've used
a HS-3 or similar. Not sure if Dimarzio were making noiseless strat pickups back then though,
although they would've had to compete with the Duncans pretty quickly

On Dimarzio site say HS-3 been out since early 80"s and FZ had Hot Stack till 88 :|

I can tell you this much: It hardly matters. Anyone else playing that exact same guitar is not going to get the same results as Zappa. I've seen a lot of amateur guitarists trying to copy some established guitar player's set up. They've all remained amateurs.

I agree it doesn't 'matter', but nowt wrong with hearing a guitar tone you love and trying to get the same tone from your own gear.
Can't help though - I'm happy with a tele.
