Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) is a cheap label to gather all the wide range of modern popular music from most different backgounds and origins.

Thanks to the advent of YouTube, now I am able to share with all my fellow Zappanatics some very good music:

I will start with a little Yamandu Costa:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49_T5sKk30M

And then, some Egberto Gismonti Group:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3jBpNj7qyM

For not sounding completely alien, here are John Maclaughlin and Paco de Lucia performing Egberto Gismonti's Frevo Rasgado:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fA75X7WzA-U

Robertinho Silva, drum solo:

Hey GG -

I used to run sound for Chicago Samba School every now and then. For in between sets, they used to bring in cds by Jorge Ben that I thought were great. Since then, I've bought a couple albums:

But, was wondering if you had any suggestions for my next purchase either Jorge Ben or another artist that plays with the great styles of rhythms like he uses. I don't speak much Spanish, so mostly what I like are the HUGE drums used in Samba styles. <BOOM!>

Those might be good Jorge Ben albums! Now he changed his name to Jorge Benjor.

I recommend some Farofa Carioca with Seu Jorge (Moro no Brasil album). The lead singer now has a solo samba career and played a role in Cidade de Deus:

Haha... Great Stuff!
Not exactly what I meant... I was thinking more traditional instrumentation, but thanx anyway, very cool.

More Milton Nascimento with Wayne Shorter, playing one of my favourite songs, Lilia. Not the best version (check Wayne Shorter's Native Dancer for that), but a great song nonetheless!

This stuff is great, it's as if Donovan himself... Wait a minute, wrong sentence... Ahem... This is some great stuff GG, thanks for introducing me first to Hermeto and now all these wonderful artists!

By the way have you seen John McLaughlin and Paco De Lucia playing an arrangement of Egberto Gismonti's 'Frevo Rasgado'? If not then please check this out.

Thanks Dan, if you check again you will see an alternative link for that vid on the opening post.

If you dig Mclaughlin (how could one not?) you might like this...

Hamilton de Holanda Quintet pays tribute to Hermeto's 70th birthday (there is a beautiful actress which talks for a while in the begining, hey you can listen to what Brazilian Portuguese sounds):

More alternative, good quality music for your Saturday:

Itiberê Orquestra Família. Hermeto's bassist band... I like to think that besides the obvious Brazilian roots, it is a cross between the 73-Crimson band with the Petit Wazoo combo:

Yamandu Costa playing a famous Choro (if you care about guitar playing, check out this. BBP migh like this, since she is into Villa-Lobos):

The only Brazilian musician is Seu Jorge. He does a bunch of Bowie songs in Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou. Here are some of his takes from that.

I saw Sergio Mendes at the Hollywood Bowl last weekend with my new boss. It was actually the first time I've been to the company boxes so it was pretty cool just being at the Bowl. I love it there. I don't have videos.

Hey girls and boys...

Do yoseff a favum 'n DONWLOAD it! It is free and it has the artist's consent to be distributed freely:

Image
Ramo

This is the very best ensemble I have seen playing in the last years: it is a group of five young composers (in this record they were in an expanded formation with a sixth member), arrangers and multi-instrumentalist musicians with classical background, playing modern popular avant-guard instrumental music.

The drummer is amongst the very best I have seen playing live. Don't believe me, take a look yourself:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Risd4uWCw_0#

In case anyone takes their time to check it out, I would greatly appreciate honest and spontaneous comments. Cheers.

Raphael Rabello - Garota De Ipanema
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5ru2fR_O60

Once considered one of the very best acoustic guitar players in the world, Raphael Rabello's live is a half happy (his musical achievements), but rather sad story: died young from AIDS and cocaine abuse at 33 years old.

More on him:
