I've have posted about him in the forum elsewhere, but this seems to be appropriate:

Alan Turing, British mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst, and computer scientist. He was highly influential in the development of computer science, giving a formalisation of the concepts of "algorithm" and "computation" with the Turing machine, which can be considered a model of a general purpose computer. Turing is widely considered to be the father of computer science and artificial intelligence. Turing's homosexuality resulted in a criminal prosecution in 1952, when homosexual acts were still illegal in the United Kingdom. He accepted treatment with female hormones (chemical castration) as an alternative to prison. Turing died in 1954, just over two weeks before his 42nd birthday, from cyanide poisoning.

Builder of cars , radios , refrigerators , radio stations ( WLW The Nations Station) and was partly credited for winning WWII with the invention of proximity switches for the bombs that defeated the Allies foes.

Oliver Sacks

British-American biologist, neurologist, writer, and amateur chemist known as the professor of neurology and psychiatry at Columbia University, where he held the position of "Columbia Artist".



Sacks is the author of numerous best-selling books, including several collections of case studies of people with neurological disorders. His 1973 book Awakenings was adapted into an Academy Award-nominated film of the same name in 1990 starring Robin Williams and Robert De Niro. He, and his book Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain, were the subject of "Musical Minds", an episode of the PBS series Nova.
