Really, Mr. Green Genes, I can't thank you enough for introducing me to this guy. I know I've gushed about 3 times previous in this thread, but the fact that I could have gone through life never having heard his music is pretty depressing. Thanks for saving me from that fate!

Hermeto Pascoal - Live at Montreux Jazz Festival (1979)
Very nice clip of Hermeto doing an intense improvisation on rhodes, clavinet and vocal scat.

Bravo, if you haven't heard before, make sure to check this very first Airto - Hermeto collaboration, dated from 1967. It is said to have influenced the Beatleas and that it have forever changed the face of Brazilian instrumental music. I consider it to be the very first fusion album (although it isn't electric, just some guitars).

Hey Greenie!

I am checking out that Mundo Verde Esperanēa album and there really seem to be a lot of Zappa esque tunes. At times I can't help but think how FZ bands from mid seventies would have sounded like had FZ retained the services of Bunk Gardner and Ian Underwood (doubling on piano) on winds. There's some Roxy/Helsinki sound on these tunes, but also some quirky clarinets a la Hot Rats or some weird Uncle Meat type sounds too. Seems to be cool stuff.

Ok, Here is the deal. This is the original MUNDO VERDE ESPERANÇA album, which was about to be released back in 1989, but was aborted in the last minute because Hermeto wouldn't agree with the record company's policies (pretty much like Zappa and Warner).

The other version was released in 2003 and only has three common compositions (although different arranjements). The 1989 version is still with the classic O Grupo line-up, with Carlos Malta on winds and Jovino on piano. Take it away:

The Original Mundo Verde Esperança - 1989 (very rough unmastered mix):

Part 2:

Enjoy!

Yes, actually. The album you've mentioned in the first place (2003), was freshly recorded that year. Only 3 tracks on the original 1989 version made it to the 2003 version, but they too were newly recorded. Also, almost all tracks in the 2003 album (many already present in his live repertoire) were re-baptized (i.e. were given new names), so he could name them after all his grand-sons and daughters and a brazilian musician.

OOpss: I am afraight those links for the 1989 version aren't working anymore  It is a hell of an album... If I can find an update I will post it here...

Just had to share with you. Those into big bands should check it out.

This is Itiberê's Zwarg Band. The Itiberê Orquestra Familia. A bunch of kids playing an incredibly complex music, exploring the good Hermeto Pascoal Música Universal school. Itiberê has been the Hermeto's O Grupo bass player since mid 70s.

I guess it's safe to say that I don't like music from Brazil.

Edit: Don't take the bait. I just don't think anyone but Captain Beefheart deserves such a thread on a Zappa site.

I guess this is like someone saying they don't like US music because they don't like Zappa...

Anyway, here is a nice little video. Interview and gig snippets. Hermeto composes a symphony on the spot during the show and an orchestra performs it, São Paulo, 2005:

Brainpang probably meant the other way around:

That he doesn't really like Brazilian music in general and that Hermeto's music did nothing to sway his opinion.
