Revealed: Elon Musk Explains the Hyperloop, the Solar-Powered High-Speed Future of Inter-City Transportation

Image

Almost a year after Elon Musk, chief executive of Tesla Motors (TSLA) and SpaceX, first floated the idea of a superfast mode of transportation, he has finally revealed the details: a solar-powered, city-to-city elevated transit system that could take passengers and cars from Los Angeles to San Francisco in 30 minutes. In typical Musk fashion, the Hyperloop, as he calls it, immediately poses a challenge to the status quo—in this case, California’s $70 billion high-speed train that has been knocked by Musk and others as too expensive, too slow, and too impractical.

In Musk’s vision, the Hyperloop would transport people via aluminum pods enclosed inside of steel tubes. He describes the design as looking like a shotgun with the tubes running side by side for most of the journey and closing the loop at either end. These tubes would be mounted on columns 50 to 100 yards apart, and the pods inside would travel up to 800 miles per hour. Some of this Musk has hinted at before; he now adds that pods could ferry cars as well as people. “You just drive on, and the pod departs,” Musk told Bloomberg Businessweek in his first interview about the Hyperloop.

Musk published a blog post detailing the Hyperloop on Monday. He also held a press call to go over the details.

Faster than the speed of sound... is gonna be noisy. It's going to be bad for the human body. And, if there's an accident, nobody has a chance of survival at that speed.

This idea is about 200 years old.
How to deal with a g-force of 800 mph?

Momentarily setting aside the frailties of the human body, in this day and age the enormous cost of inserting a new transport system into an existing city would be prohibitive. In Wellington (2012 population 395,600) we have a railway system that connects the northern suburbs to the city, then its buses to the southern and eastern suburbs. For a far back as I can remember the city council have been discussing running a light rail system through the centre of the city to connect the south and east to replace the buses and ease traffic congestion. The existing commuter railway network has been running at a lose for years, so getting investors to finance an elevated railway line or subway system through the centre of the city is pretty much impossible. It's unlikely that this will ever happen, but if Mr. Musk has the money and is looking for a city for his experiment...On second thoughts we haven't got the population or the distances, at the purported speeds the longest journey could be completed in seconds...wheres my jetpack?

I'm pretty sure it would give you much more than a rash. It would probably rip the skin off your bones before they disintegrate...for starters...

San Diego Hooters locations say they will not serve Mayor Bob Filner
Signs posted at all 4 city locations

Image

SAN DIEGO - All four Hooters restaurant locations in San Diego will not be serving Mayor Bob Filner, according to an online report.

Melissa Fry, director of marketing for HootWinc, which operates Hooters locations on the West Coast, told Slate.com that they have decided to begin this policy because "… We're strictly taking a stand for the fair treatment of women …"

Fry also said signs have been posted at all San Diego locations. The signs say:

"This establishment recognizes that we all have political differences and we serve people from all walks of life.

- We also believe it is imperative for people to have standards.

- The mayor will not be served in this establishment.

- We believe women should be treated with respect."

What a hoot

Israel to pay students to defend it online
AP 11:47 a.m. EDT August 14, 2013

An Israeli official said Wednesday that scholarship recipients would be free to decide whether or not to identify themselves as part of the program, which would begin within months.

"Everyone who believes in the cause, and wants to join, can join," he told The Associated Press. He said the office was looking to budget $778,000 for the project, and that the national Israeli student association would select participants from a pool of applicants.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity as the project is still under development and he wasn't authorized to speak publicly about it.

The hard hat is back

Marlborough bore the brunt of a rattling 6.6 quake that also caused havoc on Wellington roads and was felt throughout much of New Zealand today.

There were no reported deaths or major injuries suffered in the quake that hit at 2.31pm or the aftershocks that followed - seven of them greater than magnitude 5, including a 6.0 about three hours after the 6.6.

Today's 6.6-magnitude earthquake was the same kind of quake as last month's 6.5 event and was not what would usually be expected, GNS Science says.

The two were termed a doublet.

GNS Science duty seismologist Caroline Little said it was somewhat unusual to have had the 6.6 quake today as the odds had been against an earthquake of that size - but it had still been a possibility.

In the 3.5 hours after today's 6.6 quake there were at least 77 aftershocks, of which 11 were above magnitude 5.

"This is just the stresses in the crust realigning back to an equilibrium," she said.

There was a 5.4 earthquake near Mexico City, today, too.

Arrested Man Downloads Child Porn at Police Station

By Sylvia Ramirez
Fri Aug 16th, 2013 8:13am America/Los_Angeles

BOULDER CREEK – A man arrested for multiple counts of possession of child pornography in Boulder Creek downloaded more child pornography during an interview at a police station in Santa Cruz on Wednesday, police said.

Walter Louis Gafvert III, 48, was arrested at his home in the 13000 block of state Highway 9 in the census-designated place of Boulder Creek on Wednesday, police said.

Police said Gafvert had been formerly involved in the adult pornography business under various aliases.

Detectives began the investigation back in July following a tip from the Silicon Valley Internet Crimes Against Children task force, which is comprised of federal, state and local law enforcement officials.

Police attained a warrant for Gafvert’s Boulder Creek home and obtained digital evidence, including thousands of images depicting child pornography.

Gafvert was located and brought to the Santa Cruz police station for an interview.

Upon searching his phone during the interview, detectives discovered that Gafvert was in possession of child pornography and was also downloading more child pornography at that very moment, according to police.

Gafvert told police he had an addiction to child pornography as well as the drug methamphetamine.

Gafvert confessed to possession of child pornography and wrote a letter of apology during the interview, police said.

He was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail.

Seriously dude?

Another adrenaline filled day of quivering and quaking at work. Around a dozen desk dives for cover as the after shocks continue....this kind of excitement I can do without!

Doesn't look pretty. I hope they let you leave the building at work when a quake is on; or is that not a good strategy?

Not a good strategy Caputh, not enough time. Get between a door-way/jam, or dive under a table/desk. Protect your head and torso. Then once the shaking stops, exit the building by the stairs and get clear for any aftershocks that might follow. Once a quake hits your in it, so you have to wait it out. The time and intensity of an aftershock is never known. Sometimes you can't even feel them. Sometimes their bigger than the initial quake.
Ain't it fun living on the Pacific ring of fire!
