North Korea Accuses Captive U.S. Veteran of War Crimes
By GERRY MULLANY Published: November 29, 2013

HONG KONG — North Korea accused a captive American military veteran of war crimes, saying he was involved in the killing of innocent civilians during the Korean War, state news media reported on Saturday.

The veteran, Merrill E. Newman, 85, of Palo Alto, Calif., has been detained in North Korea since Oct. 26, when he was taken off a flight as he was about to leave the country. He had been visiting on a tourist visa.

The Korean Central News Agency said on Saturday that Mr. Newman had “admitted his crimes” and apologized for his actions during the war, which lasted from 1950 until 1953.

Mr. Newman, who is a retired technology executive, had served as an infantryman and had long wanted to revisit the country.

Mr. Newman’s son, Jeff Newman, had said that the day before his father was to leave, he had a meeting with his tour guide during which the Korean War was discussed.

The news agency said Mr. Newman had “masterminded espionage and subversive activities against the D.P.R.K., and in this course he was involved in killings of service personnel of the Korean People’s Army and innocent civilians.” The D.P.R.K. stands for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

Relatives had appealed to the North Korean government to release Mr. Newman, with Jeff Newman calling the situation a “misunderstanding.” He said his father has a heart condition and a bad back and was on several medications.

Mr. Newman’s relatives were not immediately available to comment on his arrest.

The detention of Mr. Newman led the United States to issue a travel warning about visiting North Korea, saying, “U.S. citizens crossing into North Korea, even accidentally, have been subject to arbitrary arrest and long-term detention.”

This is pretty fucked up

A group of girls in Egypt, aged between 15 and 25, were convicted to up to 11 years in prison over being in a peaceful demonstration in Alexandria.

The Netherlands, first country to adopt gay marriage, owes its democracy to homophobia according to recent research. King William II signed a constitution in 1848 turning the Netherlands into a parliamental democracy rather than a monarchy, after "having turned liberal overnight." It was always explained with nerves about uprisings in surrounding countries in school books, but as it turns out, he was blackmailed with his sexuality.

I wouldn't think it would matter. But maybe that's the socialist/greenie/ratbag in me.

No you wouldn't think it would matter but we are talking about egypt, on that note china has recently arrested quite a number of their people for spreading "rumors" about their government, on the internet. They are taking credit for "cleaning" up their internet .

The muslim brotherhood / morsi hi-jacked egypt because they were more organised at the time they got power than the opposition were. The overwhelming majority of the egyptian people have since spoken and so ousted the muslim brotherhood (who have a policy to destroy israel in their manifesto ffs). They are using these women as pawns / sheilds if you like in their attempt to destabilise egypt again. Whilst the convictions are 'wrong', a return to power of the muslim brotherhood would be catastrophic, so it is a small price to pay.

Not to have the "Muslim Brotherhood" (or "Les Frères Musulmans"), yes indeed, it's a small price to pay.

Anyone interested should read what is said about Tariq Ramadan. A Master of double talk.
Using every modern Tools he can lay hands on, and trying to get us back into a 12th century way of life.
Not to mention the kind of life reserved to women.

Fanatism in religions. Maybe one of the worst plague a society can suffer.

I've been producing Egyptian Update shows on our local cable channel since the beginning of Arab spring. Rather than get my news about Egypt from our US sources, I decided to hear it from the horses mouth, so to speak. I called up the local International House, there's one near every college campus, and asked if they had any Egyptians there. They did, and the rest, as they say is history.

Here's a few if you want to hear it from the Egyptian's side. I'm trying to get all sides represented evenly but even this far away it's hard to bring them together!

This is an hour show I do. The shorter "In The Studio" shows were too confining in time, so now I'm trying a couple of different formats and changing hosts. I meet a lot of nice folks from all over the world doing this. It's a small funky production but at least I'm doing something, eh?
