Jamie Kime has joined Banned From Utopia. I think Jamie will get more solo time in this band. He's gotta be ultra-stoked for this tour. BFU is now: Ray White, Bobby Martin, Albert Wing, Chad Wackerman, Tom Fowler and Jamie Kime. I think they're touring in Europe first. Sure hope they come to SoCal.

The UMRK's lawyers and suits will never stop all the knock-off muffins popping up everywhere, all the time, for no reason at all other than Franks music. That's like handing out cookies and forbidding milk to wash them down.

GOT FRANK?

I saw BFU in 1999. They were a larger band with Tommy Mars, Ike Willis(instead of Ray), Ed Mann, Mike Miller and most of the 1988 horn section. They played Sinister Footwear. They had Monica Lewinsky's sputtum covered dress on display. It was a great show.

Meteor shower will be dazzling - for some

Some astronomers have high hopes that a meteor shower the Earth will pass through for the first time tomorrow could be particularly active.

Some forecasters have predicted there might be more than 200 meteors an hour, but they will not be visible from New Zealand.

The shower will be caused by dust from a relatively dim comet known as 209P/LINEAR, which was discovered in 2004 and dips inside the Earth's orbit once every five years.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) said the Earth would tomorrow pass through streams of dust ejected by the comet more than a century ago.

No-one was sure how much debris was waiting. It depended on how active the comet was when the debris stream was laid down.

"We have no idea what the comet was doing in the 1800s," Nasa Meteoroid Environment Office head Bill Cooke said.

"There could be a great meteor shower or a complete dud."

The most likely time for the Earth to cross paths with the debris was between 6pm and 8pm (NZ time) tomorrow.

Some parts of North America will get a good view.

"It's really badly placed for us to observe in New Zealand. We're very unlikely to see anything," Carter Observatory astronomer Claire Bretherton said.

The radiant - the point in the sky where the meteors would appear to be coming from - was in the northern hemisphere, close to the North Star.

"That part of the sky is about as far away from visible here as it is possible to get," she said.

The meteor shower is called the May Camelopardalids. That is because meteor showers are named for the constellation from which they seem to radiate, which in this case will be Camelopardalis, which means camel leopard, the Roman description of giraffes.

Most meteor showers occur when the Earth orbits through a trail of dust shed by a comet as it makes its own way around the Sun.

That dust burns up in our atmosphere and causes what looks like shooting stars to streak across the sky.

Nice....

Rose and I finally got to see a meteor storm in the Leonids a few years back. In preceding years storm after storm was thwarted by clouds, full moon, or simply being on the wrong side of the planet...then came the barely pre-dawn Leonid show. We were down at the local astronomy club with about thirty other observers and it started...and kept on coming! Hundreds of meteor filled the sky, just raining down in every direction you looked...and the radiant was overhead with meteors clearly emanating from it showing clearly the direction of Earths travel. (I even caught a photo of the radiant with meteors emanating from it). It was finally happening after being thwarted so many times and that caused a giddy elation, everybody was laughing and partying with meteors raining down all around.

Today elections were held in most countries of the european community. Todays google starting page refered to the event this way:
Image
A european parliament was voted that in the future might become the parliament of the united states of europe. It seems that in lots of the participating countries those parties had lots of succes that hate the idea of united states of europe to-be (in france for instance).

I was relieved about them, too. Pity about the French - though you never notice it when you go to France. Most worried about the UK.

Solar Panels Drain the Sun’s Energy, Experts Say
Image

<National Report>This week, a scientific research facility in Wyoming made a startling discovery that is certain to change the way millions of Americans look at the environmentalism movement, after they found conclusive evidence that solar panels not only convert the sun’s energy into usable energy, but that they are also draining the sun of its own energy, possibly with catastrophic consequences far worse than global warming.

Scientists at the Wyoming Institute of Technology, a privately-owned think tank located in Cheyenne, Wyoming, discovered that energy radiated from the sun isn’t merely captured in solar panels, but that energy is directly physically drawn from the sun by those panels, in a process they refer to as “forced photovoltaic drainage.”

“Put into laymen’s terms, the solar panels capture the sun’s energy, but pull on the sun over time, forcing more energy to be released than the sun is actually producing,” WIT claims in a scientific white paper published on Wednesday. “Imagine a waterfall, dumping water. But you aren’t catching the water in buckets, but rather sucking it in with a vacuum cleaner. Eventually, you’re going to suck in so much water that you drain the river above that waterfall completely.”

That's straight out of the 12th century.

This just in : Solar eclipses are a sign that the gods are angry with humans and must be pleased by giving them 10% of your income or a human offering if you can swing it.

European Elections on Sunday.

In France the Front National (basically a neoNazi party) WINS with 25% of the vote and will send 24 seats to the euro parliment. Of course, this amid record breaking abstentionism. Less than half of eligible voters cast their votes.
Once again, when the Socialist party is in power, the extreme right wing gets more votes. Once again, when a european country is mired in recession and unemployement, the fascists gain power(it happened in 1933. Remember?).
Last week the founding father of the the party, and father of the present party leader Marine Le Pen, was quoted as saying one answer to the immigration problem coming from Africa would be the Ebola Virus.
