New geoglyphs found in Nazca desert after sandstorm
Aug 07, 2014 by Bob Yirka

Image

(Phys.org) —While flying over the famous Nazca desert recently, pilot Eduardo Herrán Gómez de la Torre spotted some geoglyphs that had not been seen before. He believes the geoglyphs or Nazca Lines, as others call them, were exposed after recent sand-storms carried away soil that was covering them.

The Nazca Lines have become world famous, showing up in paintings, movies, books and news articles. They exist on the floor of the Nazca desert in a southwestern part of Peru, near the ocean. Scientists believe the figures (approximately 700 in all) were created by the ancient Nazca people over a time period of a thousand years—500BC to 500AD. The geoglyphs vary in size and have been categorized into two distinct categories: natural objects and geometric figures. The natural objects include animals such as birds, camelids, or snakes. It is believed the lines were created by removing iron-oxide coated pellets to a depth of four to six inches—that left the lighter sand below in stark contrast to the surrounding area. The images vary dramatically in size, with the largest approximately 935 feet long. It is a myth that the figures on the desert floor can only be seen by aircraft (they were first "discovered" by a pilot flying over the desert in 1939). In fact, they can be seen quite easily when standing on nearby mountains or hills.

The newly revealed figures discovered by de la Torre are of a snake (approximately 196 feet in length), a bird, a camelid (perhaps a llama) and some zig-zag lines. They are actually on some hills in the El Ingenio Valley and Pampas de Jumana near the desert floor. Archeologists have been alerted to authenticate the find.

The reason for the creation of the geoglyphs is still uncertain, though a host of possible explanations have been offered, many centered around religion and or water. Interestingly, all of the figures are believed to have been created using a single line that never crosses itself. Similar to how a picture might be drawn with a pencil, never lifting it from the paper. It has also been noted that many of the images depicted by geoglyphs also appear on pottery made by people over the same time period, and, archeologists have found evidence of wooden stakes used to help create the images, suggesting they were made using very simple techniques.

Tony Stewart pulls out of race after killing driver

Tony Stewart pulled out of the NASCAR race at Watkins Glen Sunday, 12 hours after the three-time champion struck and killed a sprint car driver who had climbed from his car and was on the darkened dirt track trying to confront Stewart during a race in upstate New York.

We had to expedite materials and work emergency overtime once to make sure that the rubber was made for them to make the tires for a Nascar race a couple of months ago. You'd be amazed at the money that was spent to make sure those tires got made in time. Sort of off topic, but it does kind of fit with your story.

I wonder if they will end up trying to say Tony hit him on purpose? You know there will be some sort of lawsuits involved.

A local good news story

Musician gets 'life story' guitar back after seven years

Image

BLUES BROTHERS: Dave Murphy, left, plays the guitar that was stolen from him, and bought several years later by fellow musician Rob Joass, who has now returned it to him.

It could be a tale from a blues cliche - except this story of love lost has a happy ending.

Wellington bluesman Dave Murphy had his prized Dobro resonator guitar stolen seven years ago.

Then, about two years ago, fellow Wellington muso Rob Joass unwittingly bought it from a reputable "friend of a friend" who had bought it at a deceased estate auction a couple of years earlier.

"The price was a very reasonable $1200 and I snapped it up," Joass said. "I used the guitar live occasionally, and it featured on a Shot Band recording and video with the wonderful Katie Thompson last year to promote a national tour we did."

On that tour they played a house concert in Wellington. "I was playing the Dobro, and Dave Murphy, sitting front row, was obviously giving it a very close look. When we took a break he asked to have a closer look, and then told me a story."

It turned out it was the same guitar stolen from Murphy seven years ago - a prized treasure he had saved and hunted for as a young man and eventually tracked down in a Perth guitar shop.

To Joass, there was no question Murphy should get the guitar back. "I have had a couple of guitars stolen, and I know what kind of a hole it can leave. To me it is a beautiful guitar, but for Dave, it's part of his life story."

Joass, whose income comes solely from music, could not afford to take the $1200 hit by simply handing the guitar back to Murphy. That is when mutual friend Dougal Spier hatched the plan to do a benefit gig. On Saturday night a group of Wellington musicians - including Joass and Murphy - got together for the gig, raising enough to get Joass a replacement guitar, while returning the original to Murphy. To even up matters, Murphy handed Joass a replacement resonator guitar.

This Saturday, Joass is releasing his solo album, Black and White, at Thunderbird Cafe in Featherston Street, Wellington. He plans to take his new resonator guitar out for its initial performance then

World Premiere Of Frank Zappa Short Film On Sunday

This Sunday the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood will screen three Frank Zappa films including the World Premiere of the famed musician/composer's Bunny Bunny Bunny short from 1987 as part of the Turn Up The Radio: L.A. Rock On Film series.

The premiere of Bunny Bunny Bunny will be followed by a showing of Frank's Cheepnis short and not only but also the full-length Uncle Meat feature. The entire evening will culminate with a Q&A discussion with Gail Zappa, Moon Zappa, Ahmet Zappa, Steve Vai, Jeff Stein (“The Kids Are Alright”) and Joe (Vaultmeister) Travers.

Here's more info on what to expect:

The 20-minute Bunny Bunny Bunny (ca. 1987)–directed and produced by Frank Zappa–will kick off the event. The one-camera shoot stars daughter Moon Zappa (a couple of years after the radio hit “Valley Girl”) in improvised dialog with her best friend Kyle Richards and her cousin Lala Sloatman. Next up, coming in at 10-minutes, Cheepnis (ca. 1973) features the only footage Frank Zappa cut together from his legendary 1973 Roxy concerts and documents the director, bandleader, songwriter and musician at work. Cheepnis sings the praises of low-budget monster movies. Lastly, Frank Zappa began directing The Mothers of Invention’s one and only full-length movie, Uncle Meat (ca. 1987), less than two years after the group’s 1965 debut, but the film did not see release until 1987. Colorful footage from their “Absolutely Free”-era residency at the Garrick Theater in New York, and from the Sgt. Pepper/psychedelia-mocking “We’re Only in it for the Money” album cover shoot is mixed with orchestral bits from a 1968 concert at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Plus you get Rodney Bingenheimer, Linda Ronstadt, Meredith Monk and others along for the ride at the legendary Hollywood Ranch Market on Vine Street. Camerawork by the great Haskell Wexler.

Tickets are available via the American Cinematheque website.

'Beyond Outraged' Family Of Michael Brown & Their Attorneys Release Statement

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/08/15/michael-brown-family-statement_n_5682546.html

The family is accusing the police of character assassination on their dead son, saying he was wanted for robbery when they killed him.

excerpt:
Michael Brown’s family is beyond outraged at the devious way the police chief has chosen to disseminate piece mil information in a manner intended to assassinate the character of their son, following such a brutal assassination of his person in broad daylight.

There is nothing based on the facts that have been placed before us that can justify the execution style murder of their child by this police officer as he held his hands up, which is the universal sign of surrender.

The prolonged release of the officer’s name and then the subsequent alleged information regarding a robbery is the reason why the family and the local community have such distrust for the local law enforcement agencies.

It is no way transparent to release the still photographs alleged to be Michael Brown and refuse to release the photographs of the officer that executed him.

The police strategy of attempting to blame the victim will not divert our attention, from being focused on the autopsy, ballistics report and the trajectory of the bullets that caused Michael’s death and will demonstrate to the world this brutal execution of an unarmed teenager.

Full Show Friday | Frank Zappa In Munich 1978

We'd like to think we've seen it all when it comes to circulating Frank Zappa video, but we were unaware of an hour of pro-shot FZ live and off-stage footage from 1978 that was aired on German TV under the title "We Don't Mess Around." The concert film/documentary was filmed during Zappa's rehearsals at Circus Krone on September 8, 1978.

In this special Frank's band finds him joined by the impressive lineup of Ike Willis, Denny Walley, Arthur Barrow, Tommy Mars, Peter Wolf, Ed Mann and Vinnie Colaiuta. BR (Bayerischer Rundfunk) filmed the band in action and interviewed Zappa for a piece that was shown on German TV in 1980 and rebroadcast in 1996. The video includes such classics as "Easy Meat," "Pound For A Brown" and "Dancing Fool." Check it out:

Tracklist:

Pound for a Brown
Baby Snakes
Deathless Horsie
Dancin' Fool
Easy Meat
Honey Don't You Want a Man Like Me?
Keep It Greasey
Why Does It Hurt When I Pee?
Sofa #2
Vinnie's Seal Call Fusion Music
Bobby Brown
Conehead
Dead Air/I'm On Duty
St. Alphonzo's Pancake Breakfast
Father Oblivion

Bamboozled Outro

Thanks for this. But, goddamn, when Zappa puts down his guitar this band loses 80% of it's vitality.

Well, yeah. It's a catchy headline for something a bit more threatening, I think.
